❔ How Can the CDM Support the Transition to T+1? The European Commission's recent SIU strategy highlighted the role of post-trade financial market services to market efficiency and competitiveness, with the move to T+1 fundamental to this ambition. With new and innovative technologies like Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) and tokenisation key to reaching (near) real-time or atomic settlement, the need for standardisation of data and processes is clear – as outlined in the strategy “it is important to enhance the interoperability, interconnection and efficiency of EU trading and post-trading infrastructures” ISLA have been working alongside ISDA, ICMA - International Capital Market Association and FINOS to develop the Common Domain Model, to provide financial institutions a framework for a common language across pre and post trade, securities lending, collateral management, and regulatory reporting. In this article, we outline how the CDM aligns to the drive toward accelerated settlement by supporting the development of tokenised assets, amongst other uses. ISLA & ICMA - International Capital Market Association have partnered up to run an in-person training course in April 2025! The ISLA & ICMA Workshop: Securities Lending will be run over two days on 1 & 2 April, and is suitable for personnel working within many departments of financial institutions such as operations, middle office, risk, legal, accounting and IT. The course is applicable to buy and sell-side firms, plus those working within central securities depositories and custodians. The course is targeted towards those currently working within a securities lending department who would benefit from an all-round understanding of the topic. In addition, those who have had limited exposure to the topic but who require a greater understanding of the relationships between their work and securities lending & borrowing. Thanks to the Securities Finance Times and Carmella Haswell for including my comments in their recent deep dive into the Spanish securities lending market: Fostering the competitiveness of Spanish capital markets. It was great to be part of the discussion alongside Matthew Chessum, José Manuel Tassara de León, Roy Zimmerhansl, Enrique Verdu and Domingo García Coto as we discussed the long-term ambition to foster a framework for securities lending through collective investment schemes (CISs). ISLA worked with its members to respond to a number of Spanish consultations supporting lending from Collective Investment Schemes and if the Ministerial Order is approved in the coming months, it will be a monumental development for Spain leading to an increase in supply and liquidity for the Spanish Capital Market. This article is especially timely as we look towards ISLA’s 32nd Annual Securities Finance & Collateral Management Conference in Madrid in June, where we will be discussing the Spanish market in detail.
