Athletes from all over the world are descending upon Paris ahead of the 2024 Paralympic Games and we will be covering the Paralympic Wheelchair Tennis Event, which gets underway on Friday 30 August, in detail. We will also be showcasing the personalities, characters and backstories of those competing as the best wheelchair tennis players on the planet perform on the biggest of stages. The below video features France's Pauline Deroulede, who on 27 October 2018 was sitting on her stationary scooter on a Parisian sidewalk when she was struck by a driver who had lost control of their vehicle. “I immediately lost my left leg upon impact,” she said. “In that moment, I realised that my life would never be the same again. “A few hours after the accident in the hospital’s recovery room – my loved ones were there, relieved that I was alive – I told them, ‘don’t worry, I’m going to compete at the Paralympic Games in Paris in 2024'." The 2024 ITF Masters World Team and Individual Championships for those aged 30+, 35+ and 40+ recently took place in Lisbon, Portugal. The World Championships are the pinnacle event on the ITF World Tennis Masters Tour and the ITF’s mission is to see Masters Tennis become the leading sport in terms of competitive player participation for those aged 30 and above. The ITF World Tennis Masters Tour also reflects founding principles such as fun, camaraderie and community. As with the pros, the world's top junior players are preparing for the final Grand Slam of the season at the US Open. Silverware and ranking points are up for grabs as the 2024 campaign bubbles to an exciting conclusion. A strong showing at the US Open Junior Championships, which get underway on 1 September, will be a timely boost for those with designs on being the year-end No. 1 boy and girl. Featured in the below video is Serbia's Teodora Kostovic at J300 College Park - the traditional junior warm-up event for the US Open. Kostovic has enjoyed a solid season and will be aiming for a successful American swing. As an aside, the ranking cut-off for the ITF World Tennis Tour Junior Finals in Chengdu - the junior equivalent of the ATP and WTA Finals - is 9 September, placing more emphasis on players having a good US Open. The ITF has announced that the 2025 and 2026 editions of the ITF World Junior Tennis Finals - the premier international team competition for those aged 14-and-under - will be hosted in Prostejov, Czechia. The event has been hosted at the Tenisovy Klub Prostejov since 1999 and will return to the famous venue for the next two seasons. TK Prostejov also hosts the Czech Open on the ATP Challenger Tour and has been the venue for Czech Billie Jean King Cup and Davis Cup ties. Many of the world’s top players have represented their nations at the ITF World Junior Tennis Finals, with previous competitors in Prostejov including Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Coco Gauff, Rafael Nadal and Iga Swiatek. Wheelchair Tennis has featured at the Paralympic Games as a full-medal sport since 1992. Men's and women's doubles have been contested at every Games since, while quad singles and doubles were introduced in 2004. The Athens Games of 2004 would therefore seem an appropriate place to start our look back at some fantastic Paralympic wheelchair tennis action.
