As Women’s History Month draws to a close at the end of this month and we celebrate the inspiring women around the world, one of our consultants, Priyashree reflects a little closer to home. Growing up within a female-led household, I’ve always been inspired by my mother and three older sisters, in particular for their ability to persevere, fearlessly navigate life with positivity and for their selfless kindness. Learning from this close-knit team of strong women, I was inspired to choose a career path where I could play a role in positively impacting public healthcare. This led me to study biology and chemistry at school and later on Biochemistry at university, all culminating with a career in healthcare regulation and market access. At university, I was thrilled to not only dive into key scientific concepts, but also learn about the inspiring women in science that came before us, namely Rosalind Franklin, best known for her role in the discovery of the structure of DNA, and for her pioneering use of X-ray diffraction, whilst at King’s College London. Her work paved the way for Watson and Crick to suggest the structure of DNA - a double-helix polymer, a spiral consisting of two DNA strands wound around each other. Her contribution to this discovery showcases the importance of perseverance, inspired me to learn more about molecular genetics at university and today inspires me to keep up to date on scientific advancements. There has been a consistent strand woven through my academic, professional and personal life - I’ve been very fortunate to be surrounded by extremely talented, inclusive and resilient women. This month is Women’s History Month and we asked our Senior Analyst Eunmi about a historic woman, that inspired her. Here is her answer.   Growing up in Great Britain, in the beautiful rural English countryside, my only exposure to Korean culture was my mother’s delicious homemade cooking, and Korean TV shows via satellite (this was long before Netflix, when ‘streaming’ was via radio waves). My favourite was Dae Jang-geum (대장금), or, for international audiences: Jewel in the Palace. Jewel in the Palace is the tale of an orphan, who, through her intelligence, dedication and perseverance rises through the palace ranks from a lowly kitchen cook to Royal Physician, shattering every obstacle in her way. Jang-geum was a true historical figure of the early 16th century, believed to be the first female Royal Physician in all of the Korean peninsula- breaking through deeply entrenched gender barriers and court opposition to become personal physician to the King and additionally granted the title ‘Dae’ ("great), in recognition of her talents.   As a young child caught between two cultures, it was wonderful inspiring to watch this brilliant young woman overcome her roots, rigid societal hierarchy and restrictive gender norms to excel in something she loved to do and be recognised for it. Cooking for the royal plate was a high art: each meal beautiful, delicious, and most importantly- carefully crafted to support healthy wellbeing. These are likely the core principles in the cooking of many parents, historically mothers, all around the globe, as it was with my mother. My mother is still the best cook I know- each delicious meal filled with vegetables, roots and herbs that most of my friends at primary school had never heard of. Fiercely intelligent and driven, through food, Jang-geum on the show teaches herself chemistry, biology, and eventually combines this knowledge to become a renowned physician, specialising in an early version of pharmacology. The real Dae Jang-geum of 16th century Korea blazed a path for female physicians, scientists and innovators. Almost 500 years later, her story continues to inspire an entire generation of global viewers. IPG Health #WHMonth2024
