An education and heritage conservation charity which runs 10 museums in the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site

About us

The Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust is a heritage conservation and education charity. We are home to 36 listed buildings across 10 sites which include some of the most important industrial heritage in the world. As well as hosting visitors and events we deliver award winning workshops. The 10 Ironbridge Gorge Museums are all set in historic buildings comprising of Blists Hill Victorian Town, Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron, Darby Houses, Enginuity, Coalport China Museum, Jackfield Tile Museum, Museum of the Gorge, Broseley Pipeworks, Tar Tunnel and the Iron Bridge and Tollhouse. Our visitors experience authentic Victorian life at Blists Hill Victorian Town, the stunning open air museum that tells the story of the people of Shropshire during the Industrial Revolution. Visit Coalbrookdale to discover the often hidden history behind Victorian invention and the role critical role Coalbrookdale iron played in changing the course of the world. At Jackfield Tile Museum and Coalport China Museum visitors discover the creativity of the Ironbridge Gorge throughout history. Following 50 years of intense redevelopment, consolidation and restoration the Trust’s portfolio of heritage assets has grown substantially and in 2017 we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust. Today we still have the same commitment to preserving the industrial history of this region and as a charity we have a number of ways you can support us including our Fund for the Future.

  • Did you know that the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust cares for 111 acres (or 45 hectares) of land? This requires a large amount of both planned and reactive maintenance work, which cost a substantial amount of money. Fortunately, we have received help from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to continue maintaining our sites, so that more people can benefit from our local heritage. What a game changer! You can find out more about our 'Maintaining Ironbridge' project on our website: https://lnkd.in/etAa4GJi #NationalLottery #GameChanger #Charity #Funding Arts Council England

  • For 30 years the National Lottery has been a game-changer for heritage projects across England, including here at the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust. That's why, throughout the week, we'll be focusing on some recent projects where National Lottery funding has made a difference, starting with our 'Fund for the Future' project in 2018 👇 While visitor income covers a proportion of our operational running costs, our extensive portfolio of historic monuments and listed buildings is in constant need of specialised care and conservation. In 2018 we received a £1 million endowment grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and then fundraised to match that endowment, pound for pound. #NationalLottery30 #Charity #Fundraising Arts Council England

  • We’re delighted to share that our Sunflower Room project has been chosen by Co-op as one of the causes its members will support through the Co-op Local Community Fund! 💙 Each year Co-op members can select a cause to support, and the more members who select us as their chosen cause, the greater the amount of funding we’ll receive to support our new Sunflower Room, a peaceful space at Blists Hill Victorian Town where visitors of all ages with special educational needs, mental and physical health conditions or those who are breastfeeding can find privacy and quiet. Existing Co-op members can go to the Co-op app now to select our project as their chosen cause. Non-members can pay £1 to become a member and make their selection. The more members that select us, the more funding we’ll receive. All proceeds from this initiative will go towards the Sunflower Room 🌻 #CommunityFund #Ironbridge #Charity #Funding

Last weekend we hosted an event for members of the Black community to coincide with Black History Month. There were a series of guest speakers and spoken word performances, and a young person spoke about her volunteering experiences and her time in our Youth Group, a group of young people meeting regularly throughout the year to share ideas on inspiring young people to engage with our museums and the local community, West Mercia Police, Mind and the Telford & Wrekin Council Young People’s Forum also attended to meet the young people, and there was Caribbean food to enjoy at lunch time and live music from Radio 1Xtra DJ Jay. We've already begun making plans for a public event for Black History Month 2025, watch this space! #BlackHistoryMonth #Ironbridge #Museums #YouthGroup #Community

New display alert! 🚨 For Black History Month we have installed a new temporary display in the Iron Bridge Tollhouse, curated by one of our Collections and Learning Volunteers, Ellie Denton. Ellie has curated a display of original objects and letters that tell the stories of the Darby family’s connections through Quakerism to the Abolition movement, and of John Peters, a black miner who worked for the Madeley Wood Company in 1808. You can find out more about the display and how it came together in Ellie's blog on our website: https://bit.ly/4dTXvbl #BlackHistoryMonth #Ironbridge #Quakerism #MuseumDisplay

  • The next stage of work in our Conserving the Historic Estate project, funded by the National Heritage Memorial Fund, is about to begin. This project works towards repairing some 49 buildings, with work ranging from removing vegetation and external redecoration to re-roofing and stabilisation works. This time, we're in Coalbrookdale... 📍 At Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron, which will remain open to visitors during the conservation work, work includes replacing rotten timbers on the wooden structure of the iconic clock tower and redecorating the clock tower and clock face. 📍 Work on the Long Warehouse, currently home to our library, archives and the Furnace Kitchen, includes some reroofing and redecorating the exterior of the building using a historic paint scheme. This essential conservation work is due to be completed by July 2025. To find out more about this project or get involved, please visit our website: https://bit.ly/3NtlgfO #ConservationPoject #HistoricEstate #Funded #Charity #Museum

  • Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay, a day to come together to talk about mental health and check in with friends, family, peers and colleagues. This year's theme, set by the World Federation of Mental Health, is workplace mental health, something our new Health and Wellbeing group is working towards through support programmes, events and activities. So we thought we'd look back at some of the new initiatives and events the group has created so far. 🍃 Tai Chi session on the Green at Coalbrookdale 🥪 Staff picnic at Blists Hill Victorian Town 🗓️ Regular 'Wellness Wednesday' tips ☕ New and improved outdoor welfare areas #WorkplaceWellbeing #MentalHealth #Wellbeing

  • Our Community Engagement and DEI Manager, Andrea, recently attended the Telford & Wrekin Council launch of Black History Month, which takes place during October. The event was a great opportunity for us to join with representatives from different Telford and Wrekin organisations and community groups and share plans for events during the month, including here at the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust. Andrea shared that later this month we will host a private event for young people featuring a DJ and a poet - something we're very much looking forward to. #BlackHistoryMonth #Shropshire #Ironbridge #History

  • As a charity the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust's main aims are education and heritage conservation at our ten museum sites. Every time you visit our museums, you're giving us the vital income we need to care for our historical buildings and keep history alive, but this week there’s another way you can help! As part of its Movement for Good programme Benefact Group is donating £5,000 each to 10 charities which support the arts, culture or heritage and you can nominate us to receive one of the grants 👇 https://bit.ly/47XGCeH It will take just a couple of minutes, but you must do it by Friday at the latest. Search for IRONBRIDGE GORGE MUSEUM TRUST (or our charity number 503717) when prompted and select 'heritage arts'. The more nominations we get, the greater our chances of winning so please spread the word! #Charity #HeritageConservation #Education #Museum
