Isles of Scilly Steamship Group

It’s been a beautiful day to welcome students and staff from Falmouth Marine School on board Scillonian III. Studying for a Super Yacht Engineer program, the students got the chance to chat to the crew and find out more about this exciting career path on their journey to the islands.

Get a behind-the-scenes sneak peak of our photographers capturing the hard work that happens every day at Land’s End Airport for our corporate film. From Air Traffic Control to loading the freighter planes with Royal Mail post, we have spent the day capturing the great variety that the Skybus team gets up to. Skybus has been servicing the islands for the last 40 years, helping to transport both air freight and passengers to the islands as an alternative to our ferry service.

The last couple of months have been incredibly busy for our freight services, with July 2024 having been the busiest month on record for Isles of Scilly Freight. With the addition of Gugh to our fleet, we have been able to focus on supporting the various exciting projects happening on the Isles of Scilly. One of the projects the freight team is supporting at the moment is the integrated care project – where St Mary’s care home, Park House, is being moved to be repositioned beside the hospital. To assist with this project, Isles of Scilly Freight has been working hard to transport a range of plasterboard, compound fencing, plant and machinery, cement, generators, and tools to help make this happen. Today is #MerchantNavyDay, so The Veterans Charity Ribbon of Poppies bloom under the #RedEnsign today to honour all those who served under the red duster of the UK and Canada (who also mark MN Day today) in times of war and peace and whom never made safe harbour. In previous years Team VC have worked with the Merchant Navy to carry remembrance across the seas and oceans. We started in 2020 with ##PoppiesToPaddington during the pandemic thanks to the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group and the Captain and crew of the Scillonian III. Then in 2021 after the Tour of Britain 🇬🇧 wreath reached Aberdeen, the wreath continued its tour wonderfully supported by NorthLink Ferries who made sure the wreath toured both the Shetland (including RAF Saxa Vord) and Orkney Islands before returning to the mainland (from there it was over to Northern Ireland). Followed by Wreaths Across the Atlantic I superbly supported by Cunard. The iconic Queen Mary 2 carried 100 poppy wreaths from Southampton to New York to our friends at the United War Veterans Council in New York, who brilliantly distributed wreaths to every US State. This route was to honour the US Military personnel who never came home from WW1 and WW2 and the bravery of the MN fleet. But we didn't rest on our laurels, 30 wreaths sailed from Liverpool to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada for Wreaths the Atlantic II supported by the wonderful team at Atlantic Container Line. This year a special wreath will leave Routes of Remembrance HQ to head to London to honour those who put themselves in peril on the seas in peace and war. I am working on a special pair of wreaths and will be looking to the Merchant Navy of today to help carry remembrance globally. So if Tom landed his boat in the Scilly Isles and jumped in a helicopter like some kind of ocean rowing James Bond...what's happened to his boat?! 🤔 • Enter, the heroes that are Isles of Scilly Steamship Group 🙌 • The team heard about Tom's challenge, and that he couldn't row back or get a tow in the conditions, and immediately offered to transport the boat back to the mainland FREE OF CHARGE! 🥰 • The logistics of landing can be incredibly stressful after an ocean row - you can barely walk, let alone think about getting your boat out the water.
