Tritax Symmetry

Traditionally, just gone 3:00am local time is not the ideal time for a social media post, but this one's important to anyone that's burning the midnight oil obsessively dot watching. 📍🗺️ • As we mentioned earlier, Tom was forced north by the wind, the gale was just much bigger than expected, and he had to make the decision to try and make it north over the top of the islands. ↗️ • Even at the stage when he was forced to make that decision, Tom was exhausted. He'd been rowing without a rest of 12 straight hours. But once he made that decision, the concept of any kind of rest was absolutely out of the window - he continued fighting. He fought until his muscles and his mind were screaming at him to stop. He put EVERYTHING into it until there was nothing left...and even then, he found some reserves. 🤯 • EIGHTEEN HOURS of rowing later, with the wind continuing to push him eastwards, with the tide getting ever stronger, Tom had to make an incredibly hard call. 😩 • He asked for support from the RNLI at St. Mary's harbour, to tow him to safety. A HUGE thank you to the team there who have towed him in. 🙏 • Tom is currently moored to a buoy, he sits alone on his boat, in the darkness, and he's now got the biggest decision of this epic adventure to make; does he finish here? Or does he make the final push to Penzance? ❓ • He made it past the North-South line of the traditional westernmost point of England - Bishops rock. He has given everything, both physically and mentally, and finishing here is where many of the west-east ocean crossings aim for. Equally, in the back of his mind he may want to finish what he started. ⚖️ • Right now, the concept of doing another moment of rowing does not feel possible...this man has given it all. Tom's going to get some sleep overnight, and in the morning once he is a little more refreshed, he'll make a decision about what to do - we'll let you all know as soon as we do. 👌 • One thing is for sure, whatever his decision, this man has done something PHENOMENAL this summer. Not only has he challenged himself to his physical and mental limits, but he's raised tens of thousands for charity, and he has inspired thousands of people in the process. When it rains endlessly, and Tom's been on the oars all day without a break, his hands look like he's been sat in a bath too long! 🛀 • Even with his now ultra-leathery hands, the endless rainfall has softened them down. 🖐️ • But despite his pruney fingers, his hands are actually looking in pretty good shape, considering he's rowed over 1700 miles! 🤯 • In the background we can just make out some writing, "Those that have a why, can bear almost any how", a message based on the famous line by German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche. And it's as true to Tom now in 2024 as it was to Nietzsche in 1888 - this challenge that Tom has taken on has seen him push through almost impossible boundaries. The closer he gets to to the UK, the more frequent the traffic is, as highlighted by this big ship! 🛳️🚢⛴️ • The English Channel is THE busiest shipping lane on the planet (it has the Guinness World Record for it!) with over 500 ships passing through daily. 🤯 • Whilst the majority of vessels that exit the western end of the channel tend to start heading more south, there are plenty that will be heading towards Tom so he may have a few more AIS alarms going off. (AIS = Automatic Identification System that alerts him to other vessels nearby him, and an alarm sounds when one is on course to collide with him or have a near miss). ⚠️ • Tom has a weather system moving in today that will be challenging to operate in, but it should have moved through less than 24 hours after it begins. At that point he looks to have decent weather for a few days as he approaches land! 💪 • Once the bad weather has blown through and he's back on his way, we should be able to give an initial ETA for those wanting to be there at the finish.
