Isles of Scilly Steamship Group
Transportation, Logistics, Supply Chain and Storage
Providing responsible and innovative transport services for a unique destination
About us
In 1920, the people of the Isles of Scilly came together to form a company to deliver a reliable transport link to the mainland and the Steamship Group was born. A century after we were founded, our purpose is still the same. We’re here to provide the Isles of Scilly will the lifeline transport they need. Fast forward to today, and we celebrated a milestone 100 years of service to the islands in 2020. We are a company steeped in history. Our first vessel was a former Royal Navy coastguard ship called HMS Argus, renamed RMS Peninnis, which carried passengers to and from the islands for six years. In 1925, plans were drawn up for a purpose-built ship for the islands. After much discussion, the grand, steam-powered vessel was named Scillonian. Fast-forward to 2017, when we marked 40 years of faithful service from Scillonian III - our longest serving ship - and to 2019, when we welcomed our 4.5 millionth ferry passenger. Today, the company transports hundreds of thousands of passengers each year, delivers luggage and carries freight. We run planes, ships and an airport. With over 200 employees, our people are at the heart of our company. We offer the chance to work across a range of sectors within an inclusive, supportive environment. With hundreds of highly-skilled, well-paid employees, we are one of West Cornwall’s biggest employers. Careers here are varied – from drivers, engineers, pilots, baggage handlers, customer service agents and air traffic controllers to mariners, firefighters, marketing, finance and office staff. We still have descendants of the founding directors serving the company today. Throughout it all, our aim has always been the same: to deliver for Scilly. Our company is proud to be at the forefront of innovation and pioneering new technology. Green technology is at the heart of our future plans; we aspire to minimise environmental impact at the earliest opportunity.

Isles of Scilly Steamship Group reposted this
The "first of the many" wreaths for the 5th anniversary run of The Veterans Charity first Routes of Remembrance event known as "Poppies to Paddington, set sail from Penzance earlier today. It was received by the Captain of the Scillonian III, Victoria Bolitho of the Isles of scilly Steamship Group. Victoria and her crew carried our cargo of crimson over to the Isles of Scilly where it has been received by the Devon and Cornwall Police team. The wreath will visit a number of venues on the Islands before returning to the mainland. It will then join one of the first Great Western Railway (GWR) trains bound for the capital. Themes this year include honouring the work of the RNLI in wartime, the Merchant Navy and the Fishing Fleet. #RoutesOfRemembrance #poppies #KeepingRemembranceMoving #MN #MerchantNavy #RNLI200 #PoppiesToPaddington

Thrilled to be part of impactful projects around the Isles of Scilly! We coordinated with the Rappel team to assist with onsite logistics, including daily transport to and from the beacon and arranging accommodation. Once the work is completed, we’ll also support decommissioning and logistics back to the mainland. If you have a project around the Isles of Scilly or Cornwall, don’t hesitate to reach out. With our experience and local knowledge, we’re ready to help you achieve your goals efficiently! #MaritimeLogistics #ProjectManagement #IslesOfScilly #Cornwall #OffshoreSupport #MarineIndustry #TrinityHouse #Navigation #LocalExpertise #Shipping Cornwall Marine Network / The Workboat Association
Our Senior Project #Engineer Jim shows us what it's like refurbishing the Bartholomew Ledges beacon in the #IslesofScilly, cleaning rusted areas, replacing rungs on the ladder and a full repainting. Jim says it is "Tricky work due to the swell that rolls in from the Atlantic."

On Friday, we welcomed our local MP Andrew George to our offices for an engaging discussion about the Group’s operations, our New Vessel Replacement Project, and our commitment to supporting local communities. Following a meeting with our CEO, Stuart Reid, we had the opportunity to take him on a tour of our new landing craft, Gugh, which was being loaded with building supplies destined for the Islands.

On Friday, Barrie Brown got the chance to finally see Scillonian III’s engines in action- 48 years after being part of the team who designed them. Barrie draughted the drawings for the installation, including the engine’s layout, details, and connections back in 1976. On Friday, he got the chance to see them on the ship. Barrie said: “What a great treat. The staff on the ferry were so helpful, and I must mention Chief Engineer Chris Henderson and his crew who not only showed me the engine room but also let me start up the engines, which bought back memories of my time in the Blackstones test shop as an apprentice. “It is a real credit to the company that they should take the trouble and time to make a request like mine become a reality.”
