Thank you so much! It’s been an incredible 8 weeks working with James Cantley and Lisa Logie on a project that delves into the mechanisms underlying beta cell proliferation as a potential therapy for diabetes. Throughout this project, I've had the opportunity to learn and develop key lab skills, including cell culture and western blotting. I've also gained valuable experience in antibody optimization, troubleshooting experimental challenges, and interpreting complex data. Working closely with the entire James Cantley Lab, I've learned the importance of thorough experimental design and the key role of collaboration in scientific research. Finally, a big thank you to the School of Life Sciences, University of Dundee for this amazing opportunity. I’m excited to return in September for my Honours project and continue building on this experience.
Well done Ritom Baruah for successfully completing your School of Life Sciences, University of Dundee SLS Vacation Scholarship and presenting your findings at the symposium last week. Ritom has spent 8 weeks working with Lisa Logie on beta cell proliferation and regeneration. We've enjoyed seeing you grow in the lab and look forward to welcoming you back for your Honours project in September!

We did it! 🏅 Yesterday, the Cantley Lab successfully walked 21 miles as part of The Kiltwalk Dundee. In total, we raised just under £1000 for Diabetes UK, almost doubling our target goal! Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us by donating and giving words of encouragement, we couldn't have done it without you 💙

The big day is tomorrow. 😱 Wish us all luck 🍀 James Cantley Lab 🚶 Many thanks to everyone that has generously donated to us so far. If you’d like to support our efforts in aid of Diabetes UK, there is still plenty time to donate to our justgiving page. https://lnkd.in/eQQF5PWY You’ll find me sitting at my desk all day on Monday…. 🥴
With just over 5 weeks to go until we take part in The Kiltwalk Dundee fundraising for Diabetes UK, we're practicing long walks to prepare us for the 21.5 mile Mighty Stride! Last weekend, some of our lab (and Ralph the dog) walked over 12 miles around scenic Loch Leven in Perth and Kinross-shire. Please consider donating what you can to our fundraiser to support the important work Diabetes UK facilitate for scientists and people and their families living with diabetes: https://lnkd.in/eQQF5PWY So far, we've hit 20% of our target, thank you to everyone who has given so far!

We're thrilled that our research technician Morgan Shaw was awarded a Knowledge Exchange Placement to visit Patrick MacDonald and the Alberta Diabetes Institute in Edmonton. The specialist skills she observed in human islet isolation, quality control and functional assays and the networks she has made will help us to implement these techniques in our lab to the highest standard and further our human islet research. The UK Institute for Technical Skills & Strategy University of Dundee University of Alberta
Last week, I visited Patrick MacDonald and his lab at the Alberta Diabetes Institute (ADI) in Edmonton, Canada. This trip was made possible by the incredible The UK Institute for Technical Skills & Strategy Knowledge Exchange Placement Programme that I successfully received funding from. During my week, I worked closely with James Lyon and Nancy Smith at IsletCore. I had the chance to observe a human pancreatic islet isolation, follow their islet quality control and shipment procedures, and learn their glucose stimulated insulin secretion technique. I visited the Clinical Islet Laboratory at University of Alberta, where Doug O'Gorman and Tatsuya Kin demonstrated the workup of a clinical islet isolation and I had the privilege of observing a human islet transplant. I also met many fantastic researchers at the ADI including James Shapiro, Andrew R. Pepper, Peter Senior and Rebecca Hull-Meichle and others within their groups who let me tour their labs, gain insights into their research and observe their techniques. I even managed to visit the Rockies when I first arrived, something I've wanted to see for years! Thank you so much to Pat and team for hosting me, everyone I met for being so accommodating, and to the UK ITSS for funding me. The connections I've made and techniques I've observed have been invaluable for my career and our research at James Cantley Lab at University of Dundee. I would encourage all technicians in the UK to apply for a Knowledge Exchange Placement to enhance their specialist skills and grow their network. Applications are open for multiple rounds until March 2026: https://lnkd.in/eWrMbhUe
