Thank you so much! It’s been an incredible 8 weeks working with James Cantley and Lisa Logie on a project that delves into the mechanisms underlying beta cell proliferation as a potential therapy for diabetes. Throughout this project, I've had the opportunity to learn and develop key lab skills, including cell culture and western blotting. I've also gained valuable experience in antibody optimization, troubleshooting experimental challenges, and interpreting complex data. Working closely with the entire James Cantley Lab, I've learned the importance of thorough experimental design and the key role of collaboration in scientific research.  Finally, a big thank you to the School of Life Sciences, University of Dundee for this amazing opportunity. I’m excited to return in September for my Honours project and continue building on this experience.

With just over 5 weeks to go until we take part in The Kiltwalk Dundee fundraising for Diabetes UK, we're practicing long walks to prepare us for the 21.5 mile Mighty Stride! Last weekend, some of our lab (and Ralph the dog) walked over 12 miles around scenic Loch Leven in Perth and Kinross-shire. Please consider donating what you can to our fundraiser to support the important work Diabetes UK facilitate for scientists and people and their families living with diabetes: https://lnkd.in/eQQF5PWY So far, we've hit 20% of our target, thank you to everyone who has given so far!

We're thrilled that our research technician Morgan Shaw was awarded a Knowledge Exchange Placement to visit Patrick MacDonald and the Alberta Diabetes Institute in Edmonton. The specialist skills she observed in human islet isolation, quality control and functional assays and the networks she has made will help us to implement these techniques in our lab to the highest standard and further our human islet research. Research Technician: Beta cell regeneration for type 1 diabetes, University of Dundee

Last week, I visited Patrick MacDonald and his lab at the Alberta Diabetes Institute (ADI) in Edmonton, Canada. This trip was made possible by the incredible The UK Institute for Technical Skills & Strategy Knowledge Exchange Placement Programme that I successfully received funding from. During my week, I worked closely with James Lyon and Nancy Smith at IsletCore. I had the chance to observe a human pancreatic islet isolation, follow their islet quality control and shipment procedures, and learn their glucose stimulated insulin secretion technique. I visited the Clinical Islet Laboratory at University of Alberta, where Doug O'Gorman and Tatsuya Kin demonstrated the workup of a clinical islet isolation and I had the privilege of observing a human islet transplant. I also met many fantastic researchers at the ADI including James Shapiro, Andrew R. Pepper, Peter Senior and Rebecca Hull-Meichle and others within their groups who let me tour their labs, gain insights into their research and observe their techniques. I even managed to visit the Rockies when I first arrived, something I've wanted to see for years! Thank you so much to Pat and team for hosting me, everyone I met for being so accommodating, and to the UK ITSS for funding me. The connections I've made and techniques I've observed have been invaluable for my career and our research at James Cantley Lab at University of Dundee. I would encourage all technicians in the UK to apply for a Knowledge Exchange Placement to enhance their specialist skills and grow their network. Applications are open for multiple rounds until March 2026: https://lnkd.in/eWrMbhUe

Many congratulations to Aerin Dumenil and Emma-Louise Laurenson for successfully graduating with Bachelor of Science with Honours degrees in Biomedical Sciences and Physiological Sciences respectively! 🎉 Both students undertook their final year research projects with us, studying pancreatic beta cells, and were highly motivated and a pleasure to work with. Very well done to Emma who was awarded 'The Physiological Society’s Undergraduate Prize for Best Overall Student at your institution' and the 'Physiological Sciences Honours Prize' for her exceptional work. A huge congrats to Aerin who received 'Biomedical Highly Commended Talk' for her Honours project investigating the role of ACC1-phosphoregulation in pancreatic beta cells. We wish them every success in their future endeavours. University of Dundee School of Life Sciences, University of Dundee

Well done to our PhD students who presented at the University of Dundee School of Medicine PGR Symposium yesterday! They all did a fantastic job of conveying their research and thinking critically about their work 👏 1st year PhD Greg Jackson gave a lay overview of his work titled 'Uncovering Genetic Blueprints for Insulin-Making Cells in Diabetes'. 2nd year PhD Catriona Liggett gave a poster presentation studying the role of novel protein PTMs in the regulation of beta cell function. 3rd year PhD Caitlin Berry presented on her work on alpha cells, their role in type 1 diabetes, and insights into the paracrine regulation of glucagon secretion. Thanks to the school for organising this important event to share research and develop presenting skills.
