In her inaugural Budget, Chancellor Rt Hon Rachel Reeves has outlined Labour’s economic direction with a focus on “stabilising a strained economy” and addressing “long-term fiscal challenges.” Under the theme “Fixing the Foundations to Deliver Change,” the Budget addresses the projected £22 billion public finance gap with a carefully balanced approach of tax adjustments and targeted investments, positioning the UK for sustainable growth while reinforcing confidence in “sensible government” practices. Key highlights: - £70 billion National Wealth Fund for infrastructure and long-term growth projects - £100 billion in capital spending, expected to lift long-term GDP by 1.4% - Increased investment in public services with £22.6bn for NHS and £31bn in the capital budget - New incentives for retail and hospitality sectors, including business rate relief and a cut in draught beer duty Yet, the £40 billion in tax rises and increased National Insurance for employers have sparked debates. The media response reflects mixed feelings—some praise the public service boost, while others caution about potential economic drag from new taxes. The Labour Government has set a clear path, but challenges lie ahead in balancing growth and public trust. JBP's Strategic Engagement Director, James Hinchcliffe, attended the Conservative Party Conference yesterday. Below, he shares his comprehensive views the importance of developers and organisations doffing their cap to all political party conferences, even when they are not in power nationally.
Why it still makes sense to show up— even when a party isn’t in power. Yesterday at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham, I heard from leaders like John Wilkinson, Akash Paun, and MARK HAWTHORNE to discuss the value of Pan-Regional Partnerships at the Western Gateway fringe event. It was a terrific, lively discussion. But here’s the thing: Should organisations invest time and money attending these events when the party whose conference it is, is not in power? 🤔 ✅ My answer is YES. Here’s why: 1️⃣ Future-proof your network: The delegate of today could become the Secretary of State tomorrow. 🔄 2️⃣ Be present in policy conversations: Policy isn’t just shaped by today’s influencers—it’s also guided by the aspirations and insights of tomorrow’s leaders, sometimes formed when in national political opposition. 3️⃣ Investment over short-term ROI: Conferences like this aren’t just about today’s impact—they’re a strategic long-term investment in relationships and influence. For example, I caught up with one of our longest-standing clients, National Grid, which showcased the Great Grid Upgrade to engage party members, MPs, and councillors. This type of visibility is invaluable, regardless of who’s in power. Another instance was Vistry Group with Andrew Taylor FRTPI sponsoring a fringe event about housebuilding with other expert panellists. Energy and housing building are long-term enterprises that need ongoing relationships and dialogue to withstand changes in national and local administrations over decades. 🔗 Key takeaway: Never underestimate the value of engaging all political parties, regardless of their presence in government—because politics (through the power of the ballot box) rarely stands still and can change on a sixpence. P.S. Birmingham was terrific, if you ignore the non-stop rain! 🌧️ If you found this helpful, please repost to your network ♻️ and share your thoughts - or private message me for more detailed reportage of the Party Fringe events on housing, energy, and more.

Interesting day at the Conservative Party Conference 2024 in Birmingham. Heard lots about the positives and challenges of devolution/ combined authorities from a combination of those who got there in 2016 (West Midlands) and those who want to start ASAP, e.g. East Riding of Yorkshire, at the Institute for Government fringe event, followed by Richard Parker interviewed/ taking questions from the excellent Andrew Carter at the Centre for Cities fringe event about his new ways of working and future for his Mayoralty. All very appropriate since today is the deadline for Council’s to submit their proposals for devolution to the Secretary of State. Excellent contributions from all panellists. If you want to know a bit more about the ground covered in my copious notes - please message me!
