A sunburst radiates from the back of the apse in single piece sections of stone that also form the voussoirs on the front face of the arch. The back of house is no place to shirk detail and quality, but more a chance to reflect and play with the palette and details of the main house in a paired-back manner. This stable block forms a rear working courtyard for the running of the estate and is a statement in its own right. Using the Ionic column of the Temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae, this is a design for a master suite bedroom wardrobe and dressing table in black walnut within a London townhouse renovation project of ours. The restoration or conservation of a historic house comes with a number of tricky decisions, the largest of which is how much of the original fabric to restore and how much to replace. Often, we want to keep the original intended essence of the design and character of the property, whilst securing its practical future. For this house, we largely retained the existing fabric and design of the south-facing elevation that you see here. This was the only original elevation worth saving as the rest had been messed around with over time and not attractive. Today’s age of art and design is a very interesting one to be part of.
