Our Emily Hobhouse Museum project has been shortlisted for this year’s @riba South West and Wessex regional awards! 💃🏼🍷 The Story of Emily Museum celebrates the life of humanitarian Emily Hobhouse, who campaigned against the UK’s use of concentration camps in the Boer War. Located in her birthplace, the east Cornish village of St Ive, the museum site encompasses the rectory where she grew up in addition to a collection of new build and rebuilt elements. The museum building houses the War Rooms, an immersive exhibition that tells the story of the Anglo-Boer War and Hobhouse’s involvement in it as an activist. The largest piece of glass in the world has recently been installed at the café and restaurant of “The story of Emily” complex in Cornwall. Measuring 20 x 3.2 m, the design includes a 6m long glass roof, composed of 6 x 3 m double glazed panels with glass spacers fabricated with a pre-cambering process that reduces the deflections and enhances its lightness.    This latest task is part of our long-standing support to Stonewood Design in the Story of Emily Museum, working along with Cantifix Ltd and sedak GmbH & Co. KG. GL&SS developed its design from concept stage, fabrication, to the meticulous installation of its 1.2 tons panels using one of the largest cranes available in the country.   The project is a progression of our continuous research and understanding of the possibilities of glass as a structural element that goes back to our founder's Tim Macfarlane involvement in seminal projects like the Yurakucho Canopy in the Tokyo Forum, or the original glass cube of the Apple Store in 5th Avenue in New York.   Glass manufacturing, particularly for the last 20 years, is developing at an ever-increasing pace. As a materials-led practice, we are ever more enamoured and excited by its seemingly limitless possibilities as an effective construction element. The first phase of our long-term plan to regenerate the Estate Yard at the heart of Englefield Village is complete and has been marked by the Estate team’s move from a Victorian house into the newly refurbished Estate Office. We have worked carefully with architects, planners, builders and sustainability advisors over many years to sensitively convert the former sawmill at the Estate Yard into a modern, open-plan and sustainable workplace which respects the building’s industrial heritage. We’ve restored and retained the Cornish steam boiler, it’s engine and huge chimney stack. The flywheel adjoining the engine room, along with the gantry and pulley system, have also been retained and incorporated into the design. The saws have also been rehomed with the Hollycombe Trust steam museum in Surrey, where they are being preserved and put on display. Our Estates Director, Edward Crookes said: “This site has been the hub of work on the Estate for centuries – it’s just that the nature of work has changed.” He added: “Being more open plan is going to be helpful…it’s also going to help us on our journey to work more sustainably. The stunning Grade I listed Sherborne House in Newland, Dorset, has been removed from our #HeritageAtRisk register. 🥳 Built in 1720 for Henry Seymour Portman, the building features a striking grand stairwell with murals painted by James Thornhill, the same artist who painted the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral. It was used as a school from 1932 to 1992 before falling into disrepair. Thanks to a careful restoration project led by SPASE Design, the building now functions as an arts venue, The Sherborne, with a sensitively designed extension that supports its new use. 📷 Brett Charles Photography.

🏆 The winner of the Stephen Lawrence Prize 2024 is Wraxall Yard by Clementine Blakemore Architects. With a focus on encouraging and nurturing new talent, the award exclusively recognises projects led by an early career project architect. Wraxall Yard sensitively restores and converts the ruins of an old Dorset dairy farm into highly accessible holiday lets with an educational smallholding and community space. The jury was impressed by how deeply both client and architect immersed themselves in the project.
