SuDS (sustainable drainage systems) provide a practical solution to manage road runoff pollution, yet 1.5 million homes in England have been built without sustainable drainage 💧 England has fallen behind on implementation, and Schedule 3 of the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 was not implemented in 2024 despite its pledge. Let's bring the industry together to make change 💪✨ Explore our comprehensive whitepaper to learn more and find out how we can effectively tackle road runoff pollution > https://lnkd.in/eKEAJ9PE #WaterManagement #BreakingNewGround #CivilEngineering #Civils Ian Titherington

When Balfour Beatty plc needed urgent materials to futureproof the M3 motorway against rising traffic levels, we were ready to help. 🛣️🚗 And having worked with us on several previous highways schemes such as the M4 smart motorway, they trusted our quality service. 🌟 But what was the key to success? Clear communication. With tight deadlines, regular meetings kept us ahead of evolving needs. Collaborating closely with a range of suppliers including Polypipe Civils, Wrekin Products Ltd, FP McCann Ltd, Terram, Tensar, a division of CMC, ACO Group, and ALTHON LIMITED, we were able to deliver the right foundation and drainage products to site in 12 weeks, in preparation for the installation of the new concrete barrier. “The pollutants will disperse and dilute, settling or free-floating in the river, and they don’t disappear… There will be many people in the industry, including contractors involved with building and maintaining the network, that won’t really be aware of what impact it has.” Our Technical Director, George Woollard recently sat down with Adrian Tatum from Highways News to discuss the pressing issue of road runoff pollution and how we can work together as an industry💧 With rainfall records being broken with increasing regularity, the problem is only getting worse – yet many remain unaware of its true impact. Next time you're driving, perhaps tuning in to this conversation, ask yourself: where does all this polluted water go when it leaves the road? 🛣️🚗 We need to collaborate and start driving change – listen to the full podcast here > https://lnkd.in/emBHdYT9 #RoadRunoffPollution #CivilEngineering #Highways #BreakingNewGround
What is one of the highway industry’s toughest challenges that is very difficult to solve and hardly talked about? This week on Highways Voices we delve into the issue of road runoff pollution with Keyline Civils Specialist. https://pod.fo/e/2b773c Did you know, road runoff is pollution caused when vehicles deposit debris containing over 300 chemicals on the road surface? Then, rainfall pushes the pollutants from roads into rivers and as a result water quality becomes unsustainable, collapsing ecosystems and killing wildlife. According to Keyline, 18% of water body failures in England are due to road runoff pollution. Also, the water framework directive sets an objective to restore all rivers to good ecological status by December 2027, but only 14% of rivers in England have a good ecological status It is clear then, that the conversation still needs to go further and more action is needed to eradicate road runoff pollution. In this podcast with Technical Director at Keyline Civils Specialist, George Woollard, you will learn: *What is road runoff pollution? * What impact does it have and why the industry should care. * How much visibility do we have on road runoff pollution? * What are the main challenges with tackling road runoff pollution? * How can we solve the issue? * Why SuDS has an important role to play * How can the highways industry support to help solve the challenge? Keyline Civils Specialist is one of the UK’s leading civils partners to the highways and construction sectors. It supports the implementation of infrastructure projects, working alongside major contractors and leading manufacturers to deliver innovative solutions, with its wide range of civils and drainage products, expert technical team and national support network. Balancing city expansion with nature conservation is a challenge that has never been more critical 🏙️🌍 This is where geosynthetics, particularly geocells, come into play – providing an innovative solution to safeguarding tree roots 🌳 But how? These three-dimensional cells are strategically placed over the area in question and filled with stones or other permeable materials. This creates a stable, composite matrix that supports the even distribution of traffic weight, preventing undue stress on the roots below. With Wavin's ProtectaWeb at the forefront, Geoworks can support our green giants alongside urban development 💪 Find out more about the role that geosynthetics plays in tree root protection here > https://lnkd.in/eBSNVZSs #Geosynthetics #CivilEngineering #Geocells #BreakingNewGround
