On the 11th and 12th of September, two of our team members Andrew Moss Robinson and Eden Freeman-Payne attended a two-day Net Zero conference at the University of Exeter Penryn Campus, run by The Green Futures Solutions Project.
Both days were spent in the company of some incredible individuals at the forefront of Net Zero here in Cornwall and the Isle of Scilly. Brave business representatives; existing and prospective clients, academics and those with enough courage to resist practicing business as usual in the face of The Climate Crisis.
On the first day we learned and spoke about the reality of surpassing global carrying capacity and the importance of returning to living within our means. According to the Global Footprint Network, this year's overshoot day was June the 5th. At our current rate of consumption in England, we would require two and a half planet earths to sustain our lifestyle. We engaged in workshops structured to help businesses begin measuring their footprint and plan for positive tipping points, in a bid to restore balance to earth systems.
On the second day Net Zero experts Andrew Robinson and Chris Phillips spoke about the commercial reasons for embedding sustainability within your business then joined the Q&A panel with the other speakers. We also heard some keynote speakers talk about biodiversity and the importance of following nature's rules. Form must follow function, and that function cannot simply be profit.
The first workshop was centred around improving biodiversity and including this process as a key pillar within Net Zero. With the recent introduction of the Nature Recovery Strategy it is clear there is a huge opportunity for Nature Based Solutions. Local and credible carbon avoidance and carbon removal projects are a key missing piece in the Net Zero transition and are likely to be well supported. A hint for entrepreneurs looking to start something new! The second workshop was about the future of food and how we can embed regenerative practices into farming, whilst increasing distribution efficiency, reducing waste and improving human and environmental health.
All in all, a hugely motivating few days, restoring hope for a greener and more equitable future.
