Celebrating Women in Automation – International Women’s Day 2025 As we celebrated International Women’s Day, we spoke with Emily Barker-Browe, Programme Manager at L-A-C Logistics Automation, about her experiences in intralogistics and automation. Here’s what she had to say: ⚫ What do you enjoy most about working in this industry? "I have worked with customers spanning numerous sectors during my career however there is not one that quite stands out like the Intralogistics Sector, the growth we have experienced in this field and the fast-paced progression is a great challenge, working with a sector that is at the front of embracing automation certainly makes this an exciting industry to work within." ⚫ The sector is still male-dominated. Have you faced challenges as a woman? "I’ve been fortunate to work for companies that support women in engineering. At L.A.C., diversity is embraced, and for the last six years, I’ve also worked with a customer leading the way in DEI." ⚫ Have you ever felt you had to prove yourself more because of your gender? "Starting out as a female engineer at 18 my father was a huge advocate of women in engineering he was a great mentor and encouraged me to pursue my goals. The industry was not accustomed to seeing a female engineer and at times I did experience a minority that were not accepting. Fast forward almost 20 years, this is certainly not the same landscape that once was. I’m 4th generation in my family, although first female, we have a photo of my great grandfather, an Engineering Lecturer stood amongst many women at Cambridge University working belt driven machinery." ⚫ What changes have you seen in gender diversity over the years? "Over the last 20 years the roles which are male dominated are slowly changing, there is still however a gap, sadly the numbers published in 2023 have dipped slightly compared to 2022. I don’t believe this is down to the industry now, company’s are proactively engaging in supporting equality, in my opinion and experience with having daughters going through education is that there isn’t the exposure in schools at an early stage as to the career opportunities in the industry." ⚫ What advice would you give young women considering this career? "Go for it! E-commerce logistics is a top-growth market with a vast range of roles. Whether you want to work on next-gen tech or be hands-on in the field, there are so many paths to explore. AI and automation are evolving rapidly—it's an exciting revolution to be part of." ⚫ How can companies like ours attract and retain more women in leadership roles? "L.A.C. is already pioneering women in leadership, providing clear progression pathways for women to explore their goals.
