A few members of our team spent a morning with Red Squirrel Ranger, Josh last month, installing nest boxes. This is a lovely update on red squirrel activity in Cumbria, and what a brilliant video. 🐿️ Well done Josh and the Cumbria Wildlife Trust, we’re delighted to support you.
Good news from our Red Squirrel Ranger, Josh 🐿️ After squirrel pox hit Cumbrian colonies pretty hard over the winter, things seem to be looking up this month with sightings all around Loughrigg 🧡 Including this little guy, who had an interesting method of getting into this feeder... 🙌 It’s #WorldRainforestDay! 🌿These incredible ecosystems provide habitats and homes for an array of different plants and animals. There are even #TemperateRainforests right here in the UK! 🍄 Dripping with moisture from more than 200 days of rainfall a year and shrouded in mists and lush green foliage, Britain's rainforests are perfect for scarce bryophytes, lichens and fungi as well as a host of wildlife species, some of which are found nowhere else in the world. 🌍 Temperate Rainforests can be found along the UK's western seaboard, in places such as the West coast of Scotland, Cornwall, Cumbria and parts of Northern Ireland. 💚 At Lakeland, we’re proud to support the Woodland Trust who care for rare temperate rainforests nationwide. They work to protect and manage these biodiverse habitats so that generations for years to come can experience them. 👉 Take a glimpse into Britain's beautiful and fragile temperate rainforests, all from the comfort of your own home: Wales-rainforest-v2.8 (woodlandtrust.org.uk)

As we celebrate our 60th anniversary year in 2024, it’s important that we take the time to acknowledge the people who helped make Lakeland who we are today. It’s 20 years since Michelle Kershaw, our much-loved, much-missed Customer Director passed away, and this morning we gathered at the front of our flagship store to lay flowers, sharing our wonderful memories of this special lady. Here’s a picture of Michelle in the early days of Lakeland, at a press show sharing our latest innovations. Last week, some of our lucky colleagues had the opportunity to work with the Cumbria Wildlife Trust and be squirrel rangers for the day. Each year, we donate the money generated from our 10p carrier bag charge to an environmental cause. We have supported the Cumbria Wildlife Trust in 2022 and 2023 with a £20k donation each year towards Lakeland meadows to encourage wildlife. This year we donated £20k again, this time to support the great work they do to help the red squirrel population. Some of this donation has been utilised to install red squirrel nest boxes in various woodland locations near Windermere where our head office is located. Seven of our colleagues had the chance to join Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s Red Squirrel Ranger, Josh, while he carried out the installation. Joshua, who grew up in Elterwater, began volunteering as a squirrel warden during Covid. He said: “I feel privileged having this job, it gives you a positive outlook. I still get a thrill every time I see a red.” There are promising signs that conservation work is paying off. Joshua said: “Generally, the reds in our area are doing well. I have seen a lot more red squirrels this year than last. This conservation work relies on good information. We need to know where the reds are living and visiting. I don’t believe there would be any red squirrels left in Cumbria without the fantastic work done by volunteers and funding initiatives that support our work. That’s why we are so grateful to Lakeland for all their support”. #CumbriaWildlifeTrust #Cumbria
