Many thanks to Sally for her time on our visit to the Wildflower Conservation Society. We visited the long polytunnel located in Stanmer Park in Brighton with the striking tall mullein waiting to greet us at the entrance, the exterior area planted with a beautiful combination of wildflowers, and varying tables organised outside for growing and selling of wildflowers. Since 1940’s our wildflower meadows have been in decline and lost more than 80% in the UK. The Wildflower Conservation Society is a volunteer led community group working to conserve our chalk grasslands, which was born from the vital need to bring a diverse range of wildlife back to our treasured countryside spaces. As part of the Brighton and Hove Council team, Sally has been a wonderful motivator and supporter of the WCS, along with the other volunteers and the Wildflower Guardians, who are currently all working with the Changing Chalk Partnership on the Greening the Cities project Brighton and Hove City Council to bring the wildflowers of the South Downs into the towns through the creation of new areas of wildflower planting in the city of Brighton and Hove using locally sourced and grown wildflowers. The volunteers hand collect native seeds, which are organised and catalogued. As the WCS only has the one polytunnel, Sally is hoping they will be able to find additional land or a larger plot to continue their valuable work and support the Greening the City scheme. See more of their work or to volunteer with them through their website. https://lnkd.in/eTMBcmZY

  • Many thanks to Polly and John for the tour of the Earthship at Stanmer Park in Brighton, this project was built as a community centre for use by Stanmer Organics, a Soil Association accredited site in Brighton. Earthships are 'green' buildings, which use the planets natural systems to provide all utilities, using the sun's energy and rain to provide heat, power and water. They are buildings that heat and cool themselves, harvest their own water and use plants to treat their sewage. The front of the building incudes a large slanted glass façade to make the most use of the sun at its lowest point in winter, and creates a brilliant warm area for growing plants and vegetables - seen in these images where the tour group stood. The local community growing group Fork and Dig It make the most use of this space during the early months of the year to grow their seedlings for the year ahead. The irrigation of these interior planting beds is irrigated with harvested rainwater and grey water, the excess water is used to flush the toilets, which is then directed to a septic tank on site which has been designed with surrounding cleansing reed beds. The interesting roof structure has been created at an angle to capture all rain water, which is directed into a large roof tray, which filters the water which is then directed and stored in the below tanks, able to hold up to 20,000L of water. Details include an overview of the use of low impact materials in construction, using local, recycled, waste, natural and renewable materials. This included including waste car tyres rammed with local chalk and then layered with insulation bricks to create the walls of the structure. . #sustainbility #sustainablelandscapedesign #stanmerpark #drainagesystem #landcsapearchitecture #landscapes #landscapearchitecturenetwork #landscapedesign
