If you’ve not heard Meera Kaur speak, you have missed out. I attended a #culturalcompetence course she co-led a few years ago and the learning is still with me now.

Last week we were thrilled to have Meera Kaur Spillett invited to speak at Salford City Council for their October Good Practice Month. Meera’s session focused on the critical theme of Exploring Identity—a powerful and timely conversation that resonated with many. A big thank you to Debbie Elsheikh for organising the session and to everyone who participated. The discussion covered important topics such as labels, personal identity, “covering,” and creating psychological safety for groups- issues which are vital for fostering environments where individuals can show up as their authentic selves without fear of judgment or exclusion. These conversations are key in creating inclusive spaces where every voice can be heard. We look forward to continuing the work and exploring how we can all contribute to a more inclusive future. #placeisthespace #inclusion #psychologicalsafety #leadership

On Wednesday, we had the privilege of gathering with leaders across the public, private, and voluntary sectors at BT Tower for an incredible conversation on local leadership and place-based working. It was an inspiring day, filled with shared insights and thought-provoking discussions. A special thank you to our fantastic speakers who shared their invaluable expertise and perspectives: 🌟 Helen MacNamara, Chair of the Future Governance Forum Forum 🌟 Cllr Kaya Comer Schwartz, Leader of Islington Council 🌟 Michael Adamson CBE, Chair of St Mungo’s 🌟 Paula Head, former Chief Executive of several NHS Trusts Big thanks also to Simon Godfrey for hosting us at such an incredible venue. A few key themes emerged throughout the event: 1. Place Matters – It’s clear that working within the context of “place” allows for deeper, more meaningful connections with the communities we serve. When we focus on place, we unlock a stronger sense of shared purpose, helping to align diverse sectors around a common goal. 2. Collaboration Is Key – We repeatedly heard about the importance of partnership working, especially when facing complex challenges. By coming together and learning from one another, we can develop solutions that are tailored to local needs and that have a lasting impact. 3. Leadership Happens Everywhere – Leadership isn’t confined to those with formal titles. We’re all leaders in our own right, and it’s through collective leadership that we can inspire and create change across places. Local leadership allows us to respond to real-world issues in a way that reflects the specific needs of our communities. 4. Leadership Under Pressure – Leading public services in today’s climate can be incredibly challenging, but it also creates opportunities to build a culture where leaders can speak openly about the realities they face and foster an environment where creative solutions can emerge for complex problems. We heard about the importance of learning from past decisions and how building this practice of reflection helps leaders evolve and strengthen their approach. 5. Innovation in Action – We were inspired by the innovative ways local leaders are tackling some of the greatest societal challenges. The energy and commitment in the room showed that great ideas thrive when local leaders are empowered and supported. For those of you who joined us, we hope the discussions sparked new ideas and gave you actionable insights to take back to your communities and organisations. If anything from the event has ignited your curiosity about how the Leadership Centre might support your work, or if you’re interested in learning more about how we can help you deliver better outcomes through place-based leadership, we’d love to hear from you! This is a phenomenal resource for those aiming to create and sustain change The Art of Change Making is an extensive 277 page guide, created by the Leadership Centre, aimed at addressing complex social challenges through systems leadership. This resource combines theory with practical tools to tackle the complexities of systems using collaborative, adaptive methods. It's so useful to have so many practical tools for change in one place. The guide covers theories and models that explain the behaviours of individuals, organisations, and larger systems. It draws on concepts like evolutionary biology and living systems to explain the interconnections and adaptability within social and organisational networks. It provides a wide range of practical frameworks. These include techniques like Lewin’s Force Field Analysis, stakeholder analysis, adaptive leadership, and other tools that focus on fostering collaboration, creativity, and resilience in addressing wicked problems. The guide is heavily based around case studies from experienced practitioners. These examples show how the models and approaches outlined have been successfully applied in real-world settings. Thank you for sharing Kyla Avis!

It’s been an energizing and thought-provoking week at the Leadership Centre! This week, we held a fantastic workshop for Regional Development Officers in Archery GB as part of our systems leadership programme, focusing on shared purpose and the practical actions that follow. It was an insightful session - thanks to everyone who participated for their openness and engagement. We also ran a #systemsleadership workshop with NHS and public health professionals this week as part of the #Yorkshire & #Humber Public Health Practitioners Programme. It was a highly engaging and reflective session, thanks in no small part to the thoughtful contributions of all involved. We are grateful to Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for their support in making this happen. Today we are delighted to be contributing to the South West Health and Wellbeing Board Network Conference on Leadership for Health and Wellbeing, co-organised by the Local Government Association. Our session will focus on working within complex adaptive systems and highlighting the value of systems leadership approaches in the context of health and wellbeing. Looking ahead, our National Director of Systems Leadership, Debbie Sorkin will be speaking at this month’s NELFT NHS Foundation Trust 'Future of Primary Care' webinar hosted by NELFT's Deputy CEO, Dr Mohit Venkataram. It promises to be a fantastic discussion on the future of primary care, and we’d love for you to join us. Everyone is welcome! Register here: 👉 https://lnkd.in/g6wz257F
