About us

We are one of the largest and busiest acute hospital trusts in Europe and we provide healthcare and specialist services for people from the city of Leeds, Yorkshire and the Humber and beyond.   We play an important role in the training and education of medical, nursing and dental students, and are a centre of world-class research and pioneering new treatments. Leeds Teaching Hospitals has a budget of £1.4 billion and employs around 20,000 people. Our care and clinical expertise is delivered from seven hospitals on five sites, and they are all joined by our vision to be the best for specialist and integrated care. This includes St James's University Hospital, Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds Children's Hospital, Leeds Dental Institute, Chapel Allerton Hospital, Seacroft Hospital and Wharfedale Hospital. Our staff helped to define the values and behaviours that we should work to, and this has become known as The Leeds Way. This forms the foundation of our culture, our ethos and how we work every day.

  • We’re proud to share that the British Heart Foundation has awarded funding to a Leeds-based project aiming to improve understanding of the links between Type 2 Diabetes and heart failure. This initiative will help tackle the growing challenge of heart failure, which is often worsened by metabolic diseases like diabetes. Bringing together experts from the Trust, the University of Leeds, and NIHR partners, this collaborative research will enhance diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes for cardiometabolic diseases. Professor Philip Wood, Chief Executive, LTHT, said: 📢 “This funding is a significant step forward in translating cutting-edge research into real-world clinical improvements, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes and reducing health inequalities across Leeds and West Yorkshire.” #HeartHealth #DiabetesResearch #BHF #LTHT #LeedsResearch

  • Our team in the Emergency Department at St James’s University Hospital have welcomed colleagues from Landspítali, The National University Hospital of Iceland, to learn and share ideas about ways of managing patient flow in emergency care systems. The trio from the Nordic nation toured key areas, focusing on the structure and organisation of patient flow in SJUH, including how it’s managed on a daily basis. The aim was to see what could be learned from Leeds, especially as Landspítali is the only large hospital in Iceland with no local comparisons. The visitors said that it was very useful to learn about our way of triaging patients, and that our team is very ambitious, well-coordinated and positive.

  • We were delighted to showcase our Leeds Trauma Centre services to our Swiss philanthropist visitor Mr Wyss, including a visit to the helipad on a sunny and dry Leeds morning. We're incredibly grateful to Mr Wyss for his support of our trauma services and Professor Peter Giannoudis unveiled a plaque in his name.

What an honour it was to host Swiss philanthropist Hansjörg Wyss, together with The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr Abigail Marshall Katung and Day One Trauma Support Charity. The financial support of his Wyss Medical Foundation has enabled the establishment of Ward L8 (High Observation Unit) and the refurbishment of Ward L10 (Major Trauma Ward for West Yorkshire) at Leeds General Infirmary and it was a delight to introduce him to staff and patients and thank him for his support. https://lnkd.in/erq7DiR8

Do you have a question about living kidney donation? Now’s your chance to ask an expert! As part of Living Donation Week (10-16 March), we're inviting you to submit your questions to experts in kidney transplantation, including Dr. Sunil Daga, Consultant Nephrologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. For Dr. Daga, kidney transplantation is deeply personal. As a child, both his aunts had kidney failure and received living kidney transplants, an experience that set him on his life path. “The idea that you can take a kidney out of a living person and put it into another, and they can both live healthily, grabbed my imagination. I could see the difference in quality of life.” His groundbreaking research focuses on breaking down barriers to living kidney donation, particularly for underserved communities. People from South Asian and Black ethnic backgrounds are 5-10 times more at risk of kidney disease, yet often face greater challenges in accessing transplants. His ambition is to improve access to life saving transplantation in an equitable way. Do you have a question about living donation? Comment below or send us a message! We’ll be sharing a selection of questions with Dr. Daga and other experts during Living Donation Week.
