The First Minister of Wales, Eluned Morgan MS, visited our home in Calon, Cardiff today with David Rosser, Chief Regional Officer for the Welsh Government, hosted by our colleagues Craig Brown, Paula Llewellyn and Tom Roberts. It was a great chance to show how committed we are to Wales, especially with the redevelopment of Cardiff Central Square, which is a perfect example of how pension capital can create valuable community assets.   Big thank you to our team for taking the time to meet with our guests and share their work with such enthusiasm!

“My journey with dyslexia began in the early 1980s. School was a constant struggle; I was often made to feel I was ‘thick’ because I couldn’t read or understand instructions quickly, and I performed poorly in spelling tests. In 2004, I attended a course focused on supporting people with learning disabilities. One of the instructors noticed signs of dyslexia in me and tested me, confirming the diagnosis. Unfortunately, my medical records were lost in 2013 when I left the military, so I had no proof of my dyslexia. Dyslexia has significantly influenced how I learn and communicate. I find verbal communication much easier than writing, and I rely heavily on spell checkers and grammar tools. It has also given me unique strengths, particularly in communication, enabling me to simplify complex concepts to enhance my coaching and teaching. I’ve always been open about my struggles and have never hidden my difficulties. When I started at Legal & General, I had no major concerns about my dyslexia because I was upfront about it during my interview process. L&G’s awareness and understanding of dyslexia have been crucial in reducing barriers in my career. They even paid for a professional reassessment of my dyslexia earlier this year. This allowed me to receive accommodations to complete and pass my 15th exam to upskill as a Scrum Master to PSM 3. Although I’ve taken the previous 14 exams without the usual dyslexia accommodations, I doubt I would have passed the last one without the adjustments. This shows the importance of working for an inclusive employer, as L&G’s understanding and support have been crucial in my personal and professional growth. My manager, James O'Keefe, has been incredibly supportive, often referring to my dyslexia as a ‘superpower’ that allows me to see and do things differently. I’m grateful for the opportunities and support I’ve received, and I hope my story encourages others to embrace their differences and seek out supportive environments.” – Simon (Si), Scrum Master, Retail. #DyslexiaAwarenessWeek

Why are we proud to mark Black History Month at L&G? It’s a moment to recognise the invaluable contributions of our black colleagues and the wider black community. We strive for inclusion all year round, but October is a time to remind ourselves that representation matters and to reaffirm our action and dedication to diversity and inclusion. Throughout this month, we’ll be hosting a series of events and activities to engage, educate, and inspire our people; as well as featuring the personal stories and professional achievements of some of our black colleagues at L&G. This #BlackHistoryMonth let’s continue to champion progress and build on our knowledge and understanding so that everyone can thrive and succeed. #BHM2024
