One of the biggest frustrations when working across cultures is a different sense of urgency, follow-through, and deadlines. Paradoxically, (according to David Dye) leaders with a high internal sense of urgency seem to struggle with this the most. How can you ensure things get done on time? David Dye is President of Let's Grow Leaders, a global leadership development firm known for practical tools and techniques for human-centered leaders. How do you win the war on talent as an early-stage start-up? Wim Vos and Steven Lauwers did things differently from most life science ventures as they built Radiomics.bio’s HR & hiring processes. For starters - they decided to keep things in house, from the very beginning. Previously, they joined our nextGEN community to share some of the principles they followed to attract and retain their employees: - HR at the Heart: Radiomics.bio hired their first HR person when they had just 10 employees and expanded the HR team to 3 people within two years. This unconventional approach in life sciences significantly saved on hiring costs, reducing their expenditure from an estimated €250K to €30K. - Focus on Potential: Motivated individuals are more likely to stay and grow within the company. Consider training people to be leaders and high-performers on the job - but prepare the board for the increase in cost of these employees as they grow. - Nurturing Talent: Create a culture of learning and provide onboarding and regular training to help employees develop and align with their career path. At Radiomics.bio, giving employees ownership over their own trajectories significantly helped retain and attract talent from competitors (even over higher salaries). - Culture of Candor: Culture starts at the top. You, as the founder, need to be open and honest about your own strengths and weaknesses. Candor will help you and your team avoid conflicts and potential issues. These INSIGHTS and more are available inside the content library in our nextGEN community. Not yet a member? Navigating the complexities of Board management is a crucial skill for any CEO, and understanding the true value of your Board can be transformative. Eliot Forster has over three decades of experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry as a CEO and board member. He joined our nextGEN community to share his INSIGHTS on how to work effectively with a Board: - The Board is a Resource, Not an Enemy: There is a school of thought that sees the Board as a common enemy. Rather, the Board's role is to help the organization and should be seen as a valuable resource for the CEO. The Board is there to provide support, connections, and strategic insights that can drive the company forward. - Align the Board on the Company’s Purpose: Board members often spend limited time working on the company compared to the CEO. It is essential to establish and regularly communicate the company's purpose and objectives to your board members. Misalignment will lead to ineffective decision-making and conflicts down the line. - The Essential Role of the Chair: The Chair should ideally be an independent, non-investor who can provide unbiased guidance and support to the CEO. This separation helps to maintain good corporate governance and provides the CEO with a reliable ally at the Board level. A strong CEO and Chair relationship offers a vital communication channel with the Board, helping to ensure alignment and support of the company’s strategic directions. For more INSIGHTS on working effectively with your Board, including best practices for Board housekeeping and norms for compensation Board members, check out the full recording and session write up inside the community. What do successful CEOs and Hollywood actors have in common?   They use body language and vocal techniques to make a powerful impact on their audience. Jill McCullough, a personal impact and dialect coach for movie stars and business leaders alike, joined our nextGEN community last year to share crucial ways founders can enhance their personal presence and make a significant impact:   - The Importance of Body Language and Vocal Tone: Leadership is performative, and every aspect of your presence—body language, posture, and vocal tone—contributes to how you are perceived. Words are important, but your audience pays close attention to non-verbal cues and the energy you project. Learn techniques to stand (or fill your Zoom screen) with power, make impactful eye contact, and use vocal intonation to convey confidence. - Manage Nervousness and Anxiety: Everyone, even seasoned performers, experiences nervousness. Use practical exercises, such as breathing techniques and posture adjustments, to manage nerves and appear calm and composed. This will enhance your credibility and the perceived stability of your business. - Make a Memorable First Impression: Introduce yourself using a strong, emotionally resonant hook that people will remember. Jill shared the example of a compliance officer who introduces herself by saying “I keep bankers out of jail.” Create your own statement that embodies your venture and its brand strongly and confidently. More of Jill’s INSIGHTS, including specific exercises to improve presentation and body language, can be found in the full recording and write up inside the community. Negotiation is an art, not a science.    Reading emotions and connecting with the party across the table from you is just as important as preparing a well-crafted argument with facts and figures.    You can (and should) prepare extensively in advance for a negotiation. But once it starts, even the most experienced of negotiators know that you have to be ready to try different tactics to connect with your opponent and ultimately reach a resolution.    Previously, Dr. Florian Burgdorf (Partner and Global Head of the procurement academy and negotiation training Boston Consulting Group (BCG)) joined our nextGEN community for a two-part training on the foundations of negotiation.    He shared 30 different master tactics, varying on purchasing power and approach, that he prints out and physically brings with him to every negotiation.    This tool, along with a wealth of other INSIGHTS on the foundations of negotiating, are available inside our nextGEN community.    Not yet a member? Last week, our LifeScience ORG CEOs and nextGEN founders were joined by Cyril Peupion, a world-renowned thought leader on workplace productivity and author of the bestseller Work Smarter, Live Better. Cyril shared invaluable strategies for enhancing productivity and maintaining focus. Here are his top three insights to help us all work smarter and achieve greater impact: - Triage the Flood: Manage the overwhelming influx of messages by scheduling dedicated triage times. Implement the "one touch, one decision" principle to handle emails and messages efficiently, and resist constant notifications to maintain focus. - Prioritize by Impact: Shift from deadline-based prioritization to impact-based prioritization. Regularly ask, "What impact long term?" to guide your quarterly, weekly, and daily planning. This ensures focus on activities that drive significant long-term results. - Create Deep Focus: Book specific, protected time slots for important tasks. Turn off all distractions and follow a ritual to enter a state of deep work. This focused time is crucial for high performance and achieving meaningful outcomes. Not yet a member of nextGEN?
