Negotiation is an art, not a science. Reading emotions and connecting with the party across the table from you is just as important as preparing a well-crafted argument with facts and figures. You can (and should) prepare extensively in advance for a negotiation. But once it starts, even the most experienced of negotiators know that you have to be ready to try different tactics to connect with your opponent and ultimately reach a resolution. What demonstrates better procurement’s added value and strategic function? There is no secret in this, only: - early involvement of all clients, going down to the core understanding of client needs and expectations; - doing the leg-work to scan the local market and supply chains to build a realistic acquisition time-plan; - continuous coaching of the stakeholders mid-process to foster interdisciplinary collaboration to eliminate re-work and adapt to the fast-paced critical path. I cannot emphasize the last point enough: coaching contributes to a higher level of understanding and helps different stakeholders position themselves outside of their cosmos to see the other parties’ expectations. This empathy helps to achieve a better efficiency in reaching a common goal, where many different disciplines shall work together for a global outcome. Coaching and active communication indeed reduces siloed work that limits scope and value but enables diverse teams to realize their combined potential. #coaching #procurement
