As we wrap another year, our team looks back on a wonderful 2024. This year was notable as we took part many conferences and workshops, contributed to a number of publications (including an article in the Guardian!) and continued to meet amazing people across the globe from Bangkok to Kongsberg, Norway to Genoa, Italy and at home on Teviot Estate in London. We also had the joy of sharing the top prize in the LUCI Cities and Lighting Awards for Lighting for Genoa project! As we get ready to ring in 2025, we are thankful to all the clients, communities, colleagues, collaborators, educators and friends that continue to support us and promote our way of working. We wish everyone a wonderful festive break and we look forward to reconnecting with all your smiling faces in the new year. Warm wishes from us all at Light Follows Behaviour.

We are lighting social change in a way that no one else does. Lighting design for public realm and social spaces.
About us
LIGHT FOLLOWS BEHAVIOUR is an independent lighting design practice with a fresh approach to lighting design: more inclusive, more meaningful, more engaging. Light is the powerful tool we use to change spaces and cities. The practice offers consultancy and design services across various areas of lighting design including: Masterplanning, Public Realm, Exterior Spaces, Social Spaces, Light Art and Events. Our approach is based on the use of light to engage, to re-qualify, to surprise, to stimulate social interaction, to enhance and complement architecture. We are constantly looking at social and cultural local dynamics. We strive to make spaces become places. Light Follows Behaviour combine strategic thinking with a critical understanding of how urban design and architecture flourish through light. We recognise that transforming cities and spaces needs collective, radical approaches; so through our work we weave the disciplines of social researchers, urban planners, architects, brand designers, as well as (other) lighting designers. Their knowledge, skills and experiences allow us to deliver the strategies that build unique and sustainable experiences of light.

We are more then proud to see that our engagement and design work lead to a new participatory design and implementation of Lambrakis Square in Bologna! ENLIGHTENme Project Configuring Light Don Slater Città di Bologna - Light Follows Behaviour #publiclighting #sociallighting #urbanregeneration #engagement #codesign
The City of Bologna has started a co-design process with a first workshop to elaborate the future vision of the Due Madonne neighbourhood, were the lighting intervention of ENLIGHTENme has taken place. Within this framework, ENLIGHTENme has paved the way for a wider participatory process, by engaging citizens to reflect about future urban changes to improve the quality of life for all in our cities. The workshop on the 28th November 2024 was an opportunity to learn about the planned transformations and discuss with citizens the needs and opportunities of the area, in particular of Piazza Lambrakis and its surroundings. Two more workshops are to follow in December 2024. More details can be found here (in Italian only): 👉https://lnkd.in/edKxPgKu

🕯️The community gathered at Teviot War Memorial to remember the fallen on Monday. 🪖 The event gave fascinating insights into local history, with a touching tribute to Sydney Ruskin, a local soldier who tragically lost his life near the Somme River in 1918. 🎖️ David Green, whose great uncle George Wills is also named on the memorial, travelled to Teviot to honour his family’s legacy and joined in the community’s remembrance. 💡The event was made possible by the recent illumination of the Teviot War Memorial. 🔦Local residents have been working with Light Follows Behaviour to determine ways to improve lighting of public spaces in the area. ✨ The illumination of this much-loved landmark is the next stage of this community led project. 🤝 This is part of our plans with Hill Group UK to bring forward more affordable housing and regenerate Teviot. #lestweforget #wewillremebemberthem #poppy #community #memorial #regneration Royal British Legion

We are proud to collaborate with Studio Gil and Pedro Gil ARB RIBA on this forward-thinking project, a new public space for teenage girls at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Thanks to the team Black Females In Architecture, Untitled Practice, Simple Works and the Client London Legacy Development Corporation, with the input of Make Space for Girls and Mayor of London GLA.
Pleased to share that our public realm project in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford, has been announced. We have been commissioned to design a public space specifically for teenage girls. A first for the UK. Working alongside a stellar team of Black Females In Architecture, Untitled Practice, Light Follows Behaviour , and Simple Works . Link to article in the Architects’ Journal: https://lnkd.in/ebq6vK7f A collaborative approach has been embraced by our client London Legacy Development Corporation - the first local authority to adopt policy specifically for the safety and autonomy of women, girls, and gender diverse people. Empowerment of female voices such as Elevate along with teenage girls and young women local to the area has been a priority, evidenced through meaningful Co-Design sessions. An innovative approach to Co-Clienting was also developed with the input of Make Space for Girls and the Mayor of London GLA. It is a real privilege for Studio Gil to be a part of this exemplary project. Watch this space for further developments.

Last week we led a nightwalk around Lancaster West Estate to delve deeper into safety after dark and the role lighting can play. Three ambassadors of the estate, young women living in and around LW, shared vital knowledge on what they envision for the future of the estate. This sparked some discussions among fellow residents who attended about similar concerns and what other opportunities existed for adults and elderly residents who also call Lancaster West home. After a short introduction to the basics of lighting the group took a walk to some key 'problem areas' raised by attendees. Some vital insight for us to address as we move the design of the lighting forward. We're extremely grateful for all who took time on a Friday evening to attend. Our great team members who helped organise the event with Social Place and Make Space for Girls leading engagement with the local ambassadors and Turkington Martin designing the future public realm and landscape design to help address existing issues. And of course the amazing team at Lancaster West. #WeAreW11

🎉 We are excited to welcome Luciana Martinez as our new Part-Time Lecturer in the Lighting Design Lab at the AAU CREATE Department of Architecture, Design & Media Technology at Aalborg Universitet Copenhagen! 🎉 Luciana is an Associate Lighting Designer at Light Follows Behaviour and the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) Associate. She will bring a wealth of experience and expertise to enrich our program and inspire the next generation of lighting designers. 💡✨ Luciana´s expertise lies in external and public lighting projects, including lighting masterplans and night-time strategies. Her focus on how lighting interacts with urban environments and communities will undoubtedly inspire our students and enrich our program. 📚✨ Many of you might already know her since she previously organized the "Night Light Walks" in some of Copenhagen´s districts, an incredible experience where we played with lights to transform outdoor spaces. This was a great opportunity to explore how lighting can enhance public spaces, focusing on human needs and social behaviour, all while discussing the importance of lighting in the public realm. 🌃💡. Starting today, she will also support LiD7 students in supervising the newly launched Semester Project, "Space transformation through lighting design: An Investigation in how light can optimise space and learning environments", offering guidance and sharing her deep insights into lighting design. 👩🏫 In this semester project, we therefore seek to investigate: "How can daylight and lighting transform unused space to meet needs for innovative study environments, and thereby contribute to a sustainable transition" 🔄 The Lighting Design Lab, Mette Hvass, here, along with Luciana, are thrilled to have her on board and look forward to the incredible contributions she will make to the department and our talented students! 🙌 #LightingDesign #NewBeginnings #Welcome #Mentorship #OutdoorLighting #PublicSpaces #NightTimeStrategies #Education #SemesterProject #AAU #aalborguniversity

Dear all, if you are in London on the 10th of October you can't miss this interesting conversation! Please sign up! Thanks, Marina Milosev and Jennie Savage FRSA for organising it and involving us @ Light Follows Behaviour #ourstreets #genderequality #nightequality #nofear #betterlightingdesign
Our City, Our Streets Women, design and the built environment. LSE Women’s Library, 10th October, 6-8pm. Can design make you feel safe? What role does the built environment play in replicating gender inequality? Why does so little data reflect the experience of women and girls in public spaces? Where are our stories and who is telling them? And why it is important to think about the design of our streets and public spaces through the lens of gender? During this panel discussion and break out sessions we will imagine a more inclusive world and discuss how women, girls and non-binary people can have a greater impact shaping our cities and streets to make better places for everyone. The event will be chaired by: Dena Qaddumi, Fellow in City Design and Social Science, Department of Sociology, LSE Panelists: Manijeh Verghese, Mayor’s Design Advocate, Head of public engagement at the Architectural Association and co-curator of the 2021 British Pavilion and the Venice Architecture Biennale Dr May East, Urbanist, UNITAR Fellow and author of ‘What if women designed the city?’ Anna Rose, Director, Space Syntax Rhiannon Jones, Futurist.
