📢 New paper published!! One-sentence summary: "The presence of ants on flowers influences plant fitness components by deterring visitation of potential pollinators to the plants, but the strength of this impact depends on both the identity of ants and the identity of the floral visitors." In this study co-authored by Danilo Santos, Denise Lange, Helena Maura Torezan Silingardi, and Kleber Del Claro, we explored the dynamic interactions between ants, floral visitors, and the extrafloral nectary (EFN)-bearing plant Qualea multiflora from the Brazilian Cerrado savanna. Our main findings: 🎯Ant activity and floral visitor overlap significantly over time. 🎯Floral visitors exhibit varying responses to ant presence. 🎯Different ant species influence floral visitors differently. 🎯Ants impact the floral resources collected by pollinators, depending on their identity. 🎯Plant fitness components, such as fruit production and seed traits, are most affected by the largest and most aggressive ant species. ✨ Our study highlights the balance in mutualistic interactions, where the benefits of ant protection against herbivores must be weighed against their potential deterrent effect on pollinators, which is context dependent. 🌱🐜🌼 You can access the study here: https://lnkd.in/dci9Z7_A #Research #Entomology #Ecology #PlantInteractions #Mutualism #Pollination #Pollinators The Linnean Society of London
