Time to take a trip back in time to the early Universe! 💥 ✨ A new paper led by the University of Oxford and published in #MNRAS reveals the discovery of a “weird” and unprecedented galaxy in the early Universe that could “help us understand how the cosmic story began”. GS-NDG-9422 (9422) was found by the James Webb Space Telescope approximately one billion years after the Big Bang and stood out because it has a never-before-seen light signature which indicates its gas is outshining its stars 💨💫 Read more at: https://lnkd.in/eH3tq8yh #Webb #MNRAS #Galaxies

Did you miss the Royal Astronomical Society's Open House at the weekend? Not to worry, here's a few more pics! There were some gems on display, including an original copy of Newton's Principia, a piece of his apple tree, and second editions of Galileo's and Copernicus's works. There was also our oldest book - from 1472! On top of that there were sunspot drawings by John Herschel and the drawings by Caroline Herschel of the first comet she discovered.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for today's Open House at the Royal Astronomical Society 💫 It was brilliant to celebrate 150 years at New Burlington House with so many astronomy and geophysics lovers, as well as interested members of the public and even Caroline and John Herschel! It was incredible to see the queues outside, too 🪐 🔭 Here are some pictures of the day...
