Venture Capital | Climate Tech & Deep Tech

There are still many myths and (mis) conceptions about Deep Tech in the ecosystem. We went myth-busting to see which are actually false or true in the latest European Deep Tech report 2025 by Lakestar, Walden Catalyst Ventures, Dealroom.co and Hello Tomorrow. Here is what we found out: 1️⃣Deep Tech is an undefined term ⛔No, we define Deep Tech as novel scientific or engineering breakthroughs making their way into products and companies for the first time. 2️⃣ Deep tech is a new phenomenon in venture capital ⛔No, Deep Tech venture financing has always existed and shaped the sovereignty of nations (VC actually started as being only deep tech backing semiconductor and defence) 3️⃣Deep Tech companies need more capital ✅Yes, Deep Tech startups require more capital at any stage of development on average. However, when done properly, CapEx investment allows Deep  Tech companies to build moats and grow bigger for longer than their SaaS counterparts (Between 20-40% of all venture capital dollars invested in SaaS companies is used for advertising!) 4️⃣Deep Tech companies take longer to achieve revenue ✅Yes and No ⛔. Deep tech companies take more time and capital to reach early revenues, but they then catch up when scaling up significantly. 5️⃣Deep Tech companies fail more often ⛔No, failure rates for Deep Tech startups are in line with the rest of tech 6️⃣Deep Tech takes more time to exit ⛔No, similar exit timelines compared to Regular Tech. However, we need more high-profile Deep Tech exits in Europe (crazy to think that the top two acquisitions in 2024 were US funds and corporates buying European Deep tech champions for cheap) 7️⃣Deep tech investing doesn't deliver top returns ⛔No, Deep Tech funds generate returns similar to or better than Regular Tech funds, and more (with hardware Deep Tech performing even better). In the full report you can discover more on: The opportunity in Europe Deep Tech VC funding Deep Tech by segment Help for Deep Tech Founders Challenges and recommendations link below 👇

Last week, we brought together some of the brightest People leaders across our portfolio and network at Phoenix Court, for an evening of insightful conversations and meaningful connections, as we explored key topics shaping the future of work. We were thrilled to hear from Liza H. and Jennifer Craddock on a thought-provoking panel facilitated by our very own Catherine Lenson about the evolving DEI landscape. Meanwhile, Siadhal Magos (founder at Metaview) shared his journey to founding Metaview in a fireside chat with Emma Ruth Phillips, offering powerful insights on AI's growing role in the hiring process. A huge thank you to our speakers for sharing their wisdom, and to everyone who joined us for such a memorable evening 🌟

It’s always pleasing when industrial collaboration bears fruit and yesterday we saw 60 low-carbon concrete railway sleepers installed at the Global Centre Of Rail Excellence in South Wales. The installation is the final part of an Innovate UK-funded project, where we partnered with CEMEX UK to deliver a more-sustainable sleeper using our graphene-enhanced admixture. We are one of 12 innovative technologies showcasing at the GCRE Demonstration Day next week (Thu 20 March), at the site - a repurposed open-cast coal mine, north of Swansea - and we look forward to meeting stakeholders from the rail industry and local and national government to tell them more about the future of low-carbon construction. 🌍 🏗️ ♻️ Many thanks to Paul Crowther and Chris Clarke from Cemex Rail for their invaluable expertise and assistance on the project and all the GCRE team and contractors KGJ Price Rail Ltd for their help on installation day. 🙏 You can still register for the event: https://lnkd.in/eQTqQw2p LocalGlobe Robin Klein Molten Ventures George Chalmers, CFA Arup Kelvin Davies Andrew Johnson Stephen Fieldhouse Neil Witten Mike Harrison Alex McDermott Dave Evans Craig Dawson Alan Beck Yasmim Mendonça Camille Wright Jessica Maldonado Nikki Mansouri Ph.D George Delleman Oliver Gordon Ayla Mafuta #graphene #engineering #sustainability #concrete #netzero

Europe is fragmented, complex to operate in, and largely made up of traditional industries. Many companies here missed the SaaS revolution entirely. But we think it's precisely these conditions that will foster some of the largest and most enduring AI applications globally. I've written about why we're so excited and what we've been seeing. Please take a read! Let’s Lean into Europe’s Complexity https://lnkd.in/e5Fem5MZ

every part of our ecosystem is unimaginable from 18 years ago - no Seedcamp, no Entrepreneurs First as Harry Stebbings and team showed yesterday, the list is so long - the only amazing thing to me is that its taken everyone so long to wake up and smell the coffee :) #longnewpaloalto #projecteurope

Last week, we launched Open Court, our new meetup inspired by the Open Coffee Club that Saul Klein began two decades ago. What started as small gatherings in a London Starbucks in 2007 spread, spanning 200+ chapters in cities worldwide. The most exciting things happen when the right people talk to each other. Our goal with Open Court is to create a space where talented builders can connect meaningfully for a few hours, bringing together the full spectrum of talents that power great companies—product, engineering, growth, sales, etc. No recordings, no livestreams—just curious people leaning into great conversations. While the name is a direct reference to our heritage, the initiative is an acknowledgement of the significant growth of the European ecosystem (and as we can see with every day that goes by, it's accelerating). The inaugural Open Court featured demos and conversations with teams from Anthropic, Meta Reality Labs, ElevenLabs, Gradient Labs, and Early. Over great wine and exceptional pies (thank you, Mēs Pies), topics ranged from quantified self to emotional intelligence in LLMs, all circling back to a question that rarely gets enough airtime: What might tech utopia actually look like? Open Court continues March 27th. We'll cover direct air capture technology, AI x filmmaking and more. We're holding a few spots for those outside our immediate circle. If you're interested in attending or presenting, apply here: https://lnkd.in/emC9MXAD

It was great to see Science Minister Sir Patrick Vallance and Lord David Willetts visit the Drone Nest at St Thomas’s Hospital in London, where they saw close-up the extraordinary work of our portfolio company Apian, delivering blood samples between hospitals in minutes via their autonomous logistics software system. We’re excited to see how a new approach to smart regulation - through the new Regulatory Innovation Office - which will help our best founders to build game-changing companies. LocalGlobe

Apian’s “game-changing tech” heralded as new Regulatory Innovation Office Chair announced Apian was delighted to welcome Lord Vallance and Lord Willetts to the drone nest on the roof of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust last Friday. We were able to demonstrate our pilot project with Wing and Synnovis to transform NHS healthcare logistics through drone-delivered blood samples. Today, with the announcement of Lord Willetts as the new Chair of the RIO, we are highlighted as an example of the Government’s commitment to a “streamlined and pro-innovation environment which allows people across the UK to reap the real, positive impact of new tech safely and sooner”. Congratulations to Lord Willetts - we’re looking forward to working with you. We feel so lucky to have been able to invest in this rockstar team. Convinced that generative AI would revolutionise healthcare, Julia Hawkins and I met with many teams from all over the world last year launching on-the-surface equivalent products: medical scribes. Dr. Thomas Kelly, YU Liu and Waleed Mussa stood out as the only ones pursuing a pure PLG strategy. Heidi Health is free to use and its adoption is almost entirely bottom-up. This approach has had an incredible effect on the team's product culture - they are truly building what clinicians want. The results are astonishing: over 20 million patient consultations have been supported by Heidi in its first 12 months. 2025 will be the year of AI agents. We can't wait to see Heidi grow further and launch agentic capabilities that have a multiplicative effect on healthcare capacity across the world. We're delighted to be partnering up with our friends at Headline, Menlo Ventures, Anthropic, Blackbird, HESTA, Possible Ventures and Archangel Ventures. CC Taylor Brandt, Michael Tolo

  • 🇬🇧 Is the UK the best place to scale a venture-backed fintech? Fintech is a huge part of the UK tech scene, making up nearly 30% of the total enterprise value of UK tech according to Dealroom.co. But if you want to scale a fintech, is the UK the best place to do it? For our final panel at our recent Fintech Showcase, we brought together Tamara Harel-Cohen of RiseUp to discuss scaling fintech today with Tingting Peng Moove, Portman Wills Wagestream and Samir Desai CBE Super Payments (and formerly Funding Circle UK). From thinking about how you will attract talent, to meeting customer needs and the infrastructure you need, here is what they discussed: https://lnkd.in/ejTDtnHH ..or read the blog post on our website via the link in the comments! #Fintech #CollaborativeGrowth #thoroughbreds #fundamentals
