We are working towards a fairer, greener, healthier and more economically sound future for all in Lewisham.
About us
Lewisham is a vibrant and culturally diverse borough. This reflected in all aspects of daily life, from the response to the pandemic where the community rallied to support our most vulnerable residents, to the 170 languages spoken in our homes, schools and businesses. We have a rich history of welcoming people from all over the world and are proud to be recognised as the UK’s first Borough of Sanctuary, for our work in championing the rights of refugees and migrants. As we plan ahead, we are working towards a fairer, greener, healthier and more economically sound future for all in Lewisham. This means continuing our efforts to tackle climate change for generations to come; ensuring that good health and wellbeing is equally accessible to everyone; and safeguarding local jobs and up-skilling residents with tools they need to succeed. Building on the community spirit and activism that has been so prevalent in recent years, we are committed to creating a Future Lewisham we can all have a part in.

Pinaki Ghoshal, Executive Director for Children & Young People: "Great to speak at today’s peer-to-peer learning event on the Families First for Children Pathfinder programme. These programmes are all about supporting families earlier, strengthening networks, and making sure children get the right help when they need it. Proud that Lewisham is one of the area’s leading this work, and it’s fantastic to connect with colleagues from local government and beyond to share ideas and learn from each other. There was a lot of positive energy in the room and some really great conversations!"

The Bakerloo Line at 119: A Journey Through Time Imagine it is 1906. The price of a tube journey is two-pence, electrification of the tube lines has just begun, and Londoners can now commute between Kennington Road and Waterloo on the new Baker Street and Waterloo Railway, soon to be renamed the Bakerloo line. As the Bakerloo turns 119 years old this month, and the campaign for the Bakerloo Line Upgrade and Extension (BLUE) gains momentum, it is worth considering how much has changed in that time and just how little the Bakerloo line has. It is a time-capsule of what London was like in past ages and, in comparison to other lines, it is a stark reminder of how neglected for upgrade and improvement it has been. The current Bakerloo line rolling stock was first launched in 1972, over fifty years ago. Since then, life along the Bakerloo line has changed a lot, including a new Wembley Stadium, the regeneration of Elephant and Castle and the introduction of contactless Oyster payments. The flickering lights might have a certain charm, but they are a constant reminder of the Line’s ancient history, yet to be hauled into the 21st Century. 1906 also saw the Piccadilly line open for business; but unlike the Bakerloo, the Piccadilly, on the other hand, is due to receive brand new shiny rolling stock later this year, leaving the Bakerloo with the unwanted accolade of operating the oldest passenger carriages in Britain. The Piccadilly line was also recently extended in 2008, increasing capacity by 23% and increasing train frequency to 27 per hour. 2008 is a vivid recent memory, but when the Bakerloo was last extended in 1917, Britain was at war and the Edwardians called London home. Since then, London’s population has grown by over two million, the City’s demographic has shifted seismically (not least in southeast London), and travel patterns have substantially evolved. Extending the line beyond Elephant & Castle is a vital key to unlocking up to 107,000 new homes, 150,000 new jobs across the nation, and £1.5bn for the UK economy each year. Upgrading the outdated rolling stock will also lead to faster journey times and better passenger experience, connecting more people to cultural, social, and economic opportunities across London. From Harrow to Hayes, Neasden to New Cross Gate, an upgraded Bakerloo Line will deliver substantial benefits to the capital and support wider growth targets in the UK. As the Bakerloo celebrates another birthday without confirmed funding for the Bakerloo Line Upgrade and Extension, it is time to prioritise the Bakerloo and welcome it into the 21st Century.
