Exploring transport history and design through a world-class collection of buses, Underground trains, photographs, maps.

About us

London Transport Museum explores the story of London and its transport system over the last 200 years, highlighting the powerful link between transport and the growth of modern London, culture and society since 1800. We care for over 450,000 items - preserving, researching and acquiring objects to use in our galleries, exhibitions and other activities. As well as exploring the past, the Museum looks at present-day transport developments and concepts for urban transportation in the future, which includes a contemporary collecting policy for the benefit of future generations.

Friday afternoons are such a joy in Covent Garden with Music in the Museum. I was blown away by Vusala Babayeva performing ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ on our new (donated) baby grand piano 🎹 Vusala is an amazingly talented Azerbaijani pianist currently pursuing an Artist Diploma in Piano Performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama AND one of our London Transport Museum young artists! All the artists have three performances with us and if you’re organised and motivated, you can catch all ten of them - on term time through October. Next Friday 21 March we’ll hear from Agustin Pennino, Uruguayan counter tenor 🎶 Massive thanks to all our young artists, my amazing Museum team, and our artistic consultant Jennifer Johnston for making the vision of being ‘transported by culture’ a reality. It’s food for the soul (in addition to a lot of fun for visitors and real gigs for our young artists) Will post the schedule in the comments- come join us!

  • We’re delighted that one of our longest serving and most dedicated volunteers, Paul Furze, has been shortlisted in the Volunteers of the Year 2025 category as part of Museums + Heritage Advisor Awards 🏆     Paul has volunteered at London Transport Museum for 25 years in a variety of roles, including as part of our object handling team, helping out with our heritage train journeys, and as an integral part of our bus restoration team. He helps us carry out routine maintenance on our buses – safeguarding our collection for the future and ensuring our buses can attend external events to reach and inspire even more people.     He is appreciated by all, and fellow volunteer Mark said: ‘He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of buses old and new which he loves to share. His storytelling is legendary, and it is great to see his audience spell-bound by his tales.’     In 2024 alone Paul contributed 842 hours as a volunteer – and, at the age of 83, he shows no signs of stopping!     Thank you, Paul, for all your amazing work at the Museum. We are so pleased to have you as part of our team. 💙

  • Research published this week suggests that boys in England are outperforming girls in both maths and science at schools. Written by UCL and published by the Department for Education, it reported that the gap between boys and girls in Year 5 and Year 9 was significantly larger than in previous versions of the study.    London Transport Museum’s industry backed Enjoyment to Employment programme is breaking down barriers by changing perceptions of STEM careers.     Supported by industry, the programme nurtures the enthusiasm children often have for transport at an early age, transforming it into an interest in pursuing careers in transport, engineering and other STEM pathways. Through a series of activities and workshops, we’re encouraging young people to be curious, creative, collaborative and critical thinkers, and offering them real world experiences with industry professionals.     💬 ‘I really enjoyed when we worked in teams to build our idea of a perfect city because it taught us key skills like teamwork, sustainability, managing decisions, and solving problems!’  - Year 8 student from Madani Girls’ School, who took part in one of the programme’s Inspire Engineering sessions  💬 'I practiced lots of engineering skills today: learning to think outside the box, sympathising with communities, communicating and evaluating in a team group, being climate oriented in our 'Sustainable Cities' project'  - Year 9 student from River House School, who also took part in Inspire Engineering     Since its launch, 350 Inspire Engineering sessions have brought together over 11,000 students with real-world engineers, which have positively contributed to changing perceptions of engineering by 82%. Inspire Engineering positively tackles stereotypes about careers in transport and engineering, with over 75% of participants reporting that the day showed them that careers in engineering are for all genders.    None of this work would be possible without the commitment of our industry partners, united by their strong values of social responsibility. Thank you to ABM UK, Cubic Transportation Systems, Hitachi Rail, Sopra Steria, Telent Technology Services Ltd and Transport for London and our generous donors John Lyon's Charity, Kusuma Trust UK, London Transport Museum Friends and Luke Rees-Pulley Charitable Trust.    We are actively looking for new partners to grow the Enjoyment to Employment coalition, supporting us to increase our impact and achieve our mission, whilst delivering positive social impact. If you are interested in joining our coalition of industry partners we would be delighted to welcome you on board. Please contact supportus@ltmuseum.co.uk    Find out more about the research: https://lnkd.in/e9ARXgEh

  • We’re proud to be a signatory for the Workforce Digital Skills Charter, a shared statement of ambition to close the essential digital skills gap in the UK workforce. Coordinated by FutureDotNow, it is a shared statement of ambition for concerted action to close this critical skills gap.

From speaking to your GP, to applying for jobs or paying your bills - daily tasks have become increasingly digitised.   Yet 1.6 million people in the UK currently live offline, meaning they lack the devices, connection or skills to get online, and around a quarter of the UK population struggle to use online services. The government’s Digital Inclusion Action Plan will work to tackle this challenge, ensuring everyone has the skills to thrive in modern society. Businesses will also benefit, with too many employers currently struggling to recruit candidates with the digital skills required to help them grow their business and ultimately boost economic growth. Key technology companies will also help the government achieve its mission of breaking down the digital divide. Google and BT Group have pledged to deliver digital skills training to thousands in the UK while Vodafone has committed to help one million people by donating connectivity and technology, affordable services, and upskilling communities. Find out more about the plan: https://lnkd.in/ekRMM-25
