Well as promised last week ... we wanted to share our #takeaways from  #ICASSP2024 that happened last week in South Korea 🇰🇷 , where Erik Goron and our Maaind team immersed ourselves in the forefront of #AIresearch and #signalprocessing advancements. 🚀 The Surge of Generative AI: It’s clear that #GenAI is shaping the future of AI research and signal processing. From text-to-speech enhancements (capturing #emotions as well!) to pioneering synthetic dataset generation, the possibilities are expanding. A highlight was the innovation panel featuring leaders in the field such as Yonina Eldar (University of Tel Aviv), Prof. Daniel D. Lee (Cornell Tech), Johan Schalkwyk (Google Fellow), and Songyee Yoon. Their discussions illuminated the convergence of GenAI with signal processing, highlighting issues around ethics, research priorities and the inherent limits of these models 🔄  Transformers Take the Spotlight: Transformers continue to revolutionise speech technology with their robust performance across a myriad of tasks, setting new benchmarks in accuracy and generalisation. Yet, their expansive size poses significant challenges, sparking vital conversations on scalability, edge computing, and privacy concerns. 🗣️ Advancements in Speech Emotion Recognition (SER): SER technologies are rapidly improving, becoming increasingly adept at generalisation. Despite these advances, the quest for high-quality, labeled emotion speech data remains a challenge. 💬 Realism in Speech Generation: The realism of speech generation technologies is reaching impressive, and at times scary levels. This progress also raises important ethical and legal questions as these technologies become more widespread. 🔎 Push for Explainability: We are particularly excited about the growing efforts to make large models more explainable. Making large models more explainable and interpretable is crucial for broader adoption and trust in AI technologies. 🧑🎓 Bridging Gaps in Academia: A poignant discussion revolved around the resource disparity between academia and industry giants. This gap calls for a strategic refocus in academic research, pushing for innovation within the confines of available compute and data resources.
