Commissioned by the Environment Agency, Van Oord partnered with subsidiary Mackley to execute this coastal flood defence project. The project consisted of 320,000 cubic metres of shingle beach nourishment, the construction of 34 timber groynes, rock armour protection and other flood risk management related asset improvement and replacement works. The coastal defence project at Lydd forms part of a much larger coastal defence scheme to better protect the Kent coastline for the next 100 years. #VanOord #Marineingenuity #coastalreinforcement #protectingourcoastlines #WeCare

Dayworks for J.T.MACKLEY & CO.LIMITED at a site in Swalecliffe ๐Ÿšง DDL have been working alongside Mackley to install a new offshore outfall pipe. Some of the works undertaken on this project involved connecting onto MH4 continuing on to the connection point off the new outfall pipe which involved the diversion off the existing promenade. Installation of a haulage road to hold heavy plant and removal of existing damaged outfall. We are now coming to the end of this part of the project and onto reinstatement works of the existing promenade and grass area. DDL Group | Devine Direct Labour LTD Pat senior Devine

Project Director Havant Thicket Reservoir Sales and Strategy Director Mackley

Havant Thicket Reservoir โ€“ The Directors Cut Post 6 - Trials without tribulations Our project reached a significant milestone last week with the commencement of a trial section of the reservoir main culvert. A lot is expected of the culvert. In conjunction with the draw-off tower and control room it contains pipework, valves, instrumentation and control systems for drawing-off water from the reservoir. It is 250 metres long, 6 metres high and 7 metres wide. It has to withstand pressures of over 40 tonnes per m2 at its peak and resist settlement and forces that would stretch it apart at its joints. To accommodate some degree of movement the culvert is constructed in sections connected with stainless steel dowels which restrict vertical movement and โ€˜waterbarsโ€™ which keep the culvert water tight. The roof of the culvert is curved โ€“ sharp corners could promote paths for seepage. The concrete finish must be of the highest standard both outside as well as inside, as the friction between the surface of the concrete and the surrounding clay must be as low as possible. The trial section is being constructed in our main compound at a location that will eventually form part of the permanent visitorโ€™s centre. It will become part of an educational resource showcasing the actual culvert which will be buried and submerged by then. The trial is already proving to be invaluable for checking reinforcement details, fitment of the dowels and waterbars and shuttering of a curved roof. To support the finalisation of the concrete mix design the trial will contain instrumentation to measure concrete curing temperatures and stresses. Next time I will give further insight into our preparations to really get going on this project!

Project Director Havant Thicket Reservoir Sales and Strategy Director Mackley

Havant Thicket Reservoir - The Director's cut Post 5 - The Little Ringed Plover (continued) A lot has happened since I first reported on the Little Ringed Plover nest on our site. It has been a journey of hope, disaster and finally joy. These birds are summer visitors to Britain and are rare with an estimated 1,300 breeding pairs. They nest on open ground relying upon the camouflage of their eggs โ€“ not a great strategy on a site with large vehicles tracking around but good for avoiding predators โ€“ or so you would think. The irony is that the Plovers have been kept safe from construction thanks to our keen-eyed ecologists, a substantial exclusion zone and the care of our people. But Rooks also have keen eyes and the first and second clutch of eggs were predated, caught on our on-site video camera footage. At this point we had given up on the idea of the Plover population increasing, so imagine our joy when we spotted a third clutch of four eggs, a joy matched with a dread of further predation. So we had a dilemma. Do we let nature run its course or do we provide a helping hand? After much debate, divided opinion and research we decided to follow a practice used by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust using a modified Gabion Basket (wire cage) placed over the nest with openings big enough for Little Plovers and too small for predators. There was a risk that this would deter the Plovers from returning to the nest and so we monitored the situation very carefully and this proved not to be the case. Some 2-3 weeks later the eggs had gone and were replaced with sightings of at least 3 Plover chicks. ----------------------- Next week marks some very significant steps on the project as we commence construction of a trial section of the water draw off culvert and a trial of the ground improvement works for our main embankment. I look forward to sharing this with you next time.

    Undergraduate MEng Civil Engineering

I have spent the last year with Mackley working on placement as a site engineer at the BlackRock site in Brighton. On site I was able to work with a total station and a gps, with AutoCAD and Civils3D to assist in the construction of a bridge, complete with a road and all its services; including manholes, gulleys and a foul connection. As well as a steel frame ramp in Asda carpark. I have helped to complete various as-builts, surveys and CAD models for the health and safety files, and greatly developed my understanding and appreciation for BIMs place in modern construction. Ive had an amazing time and learnt lots, with a special thank you to Grant Netley for mentoring me throughout the year.

Another Pride well celebratedย ๐Ÿณ๏ธ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ™Œ We had an absolutely fantastic time attending Pride, and what an incredible atmosphere it was! We were especially thrilled to have Brighton College join us on the back of the truck this year, as Mackley does a lot of work collaborating with the students there.ย  Might we add, the Mackley truck was looking amazing! We may be a little biased, but weโ€™re pretty sure it wins the prize for the best decorated ๐Ÿ† #Pride2024 #LoveWins #EqualityForAll #LGBTQ #BrightonPride
