Makespace Oxford

Civic and Social Organizations

We want to see thriving community, creativity and innovation in Oxfordshire’s once empty and underused spaces.

About us

Our mission is to revive, repurpose and transform empty and underused spaces in Oxfordshire, into affordable, community driven workspaces / work hubs; nurturing connection and support for social enterprises, creatives, makers and doers, committed to positive social change. We are progressive, re-centring the conversation of space around people over profit, and the innovative responses that promote systems change and strong collective action. We listen to and work in solidarity with partners and our wider community to achieve positive social change in Oxfordshire, with a focus on community empowerment, inequality, the climate emergency and homelessness. We also make ethical decisions about how we work together and use resources based on sustainability and our respect for the environment and each other, and we adapt and respond to change and new opportunities to ensure we learn, improve, and remain nimble, whilst moving forward with confidence.

Last week, I spoke at the planning committee meeting at Oxford City Council alongside Andrew Heselton where plans for redeveloping 38 - 40 George Street were approved 🎉 It felt wonderful; the team and I have been working so hard on this major milestone moment. George Street welcomes our first opportunity to unlock a long-term, purpose-built, civic space after years (and continuing work) on temporary buildings as part of Meanwhile in Oxfordshire. For almost 7 years, we've been providing secure, affordable accommodation for hundreds of purpose-driven groups, and now with George Street, we can build on that legacy, but with a long-term horizon for all to enjoy and shape. So, now the next phase of the fun begins and we can't wait for you to join us. We'll be sharing our plans with you soon, where you ask the questions, as well as dream the answers! Stay in the loop about George Street and read what we've been up to here: https://lnkd.in/ea_2DeyF With thanks to the team at Makespace Oxford, the skilful design work of Jan Kattein and Corina Tuna (and this beautiful image), the support from Marick Real Estate Oxford City Council Staycity Group, our Community Advisory Board and the dozens who have helped to guide and co-create the vision so far... This is just the beginning!

ARRRGGHHH HOW DO I MANAGE ALL OF THE THINGS?! 🤯 There are so many tasks that get put on a marketers to-do list. And everyone across the business has ideas about what we should be saying and where we should be saying it and how we should be saying it and who we should be saying it to. Enough ✋ Give yourself some space to stop and think by coming along to this week's Marketing Camp meet-up, to hear Ruba Asfahani and Sophie Crowe (two lovely, down-to-earth comms consultants) offer practical ideas for putting together a simple but solid marketing strategy. We'll start the session by looking at exactly what a good strategy should cover, as well as giving you ideas about how to flesh out each area. We'll be thinking about important questions to ask, key people to involve, and good principles to work by 🤔 Then we'll look at how to actually put your strategy into action, getting people (both above you and around you) on board with your plans. And last - but definitely not least - we'll think about ways you can track and measure your efforts 📊 so you can convince whoever needs convincing that you're on the right track. 📅 THIS Thursday 17th Oct, 6pm 🏠 Makespace Oxford, Aristotle Lane, Jericho 🧠 Our host and mastermind Bethany Joy 👇 More info and link to book your FREE spot in the comments See you around the campfire? 🔥 #MarketingCampOx #MarketingTips #Oxfordshire
