We had an incredible time at Turing Fest and were thrilled to have our CEO and Co-Founder Iain Mackie give a keynote speech. Iain shared how winning the Amazon Alexa Challenge helped shape our technology thesis and our progress in distilling Small Language Models (SLMs) for enterprise. Some highlights from Iain's talk: * High-performing machine learning models need 3x things: ‘data, data, data’. * Distillation is a game changer in creating scalable, high-quality data. * Small language models (SLMs) are a fantastic choice for solving specific, high-value problems in production environments (optimising economics, latency, and performance). * Networks of SLMs working together can outperform LLMs, while being more cost-effective and able to deployed on a a small GPU. * Scotland is a great place to start an AI startup, given the amazing software and AI talent. This weekend our Chief of Engineering Federico Rossetto gave a talk at the 2024 international workshop on Efficient GranAI sponsored by the Edinburgh Generative AI Lab (GAIL). It was a great space to discuss insights about improving the training and deployment efficiency of Large Language Models and Large Multi-Model Models. The development of optimised Small Language Models presents several opportunities for businesses to implement fit-for-purpose solutions at a fraction of the cost. As the demand to adopt AI increases across businesses, energy consumption, cost, systems integrations and AI effectiveness are some of the challenges companies need to navigate to unlock the value of the technology. Generative AI is one of the best technological advancements in the last decades. However, Large Language Models are mostly general. Off-the-shelf Gen AI models might not suit specific business needs, requiring fine-tuning by experts and human-generated labels. This presents further challenges for the technology to be adopted and scaled. By using new technologies such as knowledge distillation we are working towards implementing AI at a scale in a way that hasn’t been possible. Malted AI, an Edinburgh-based tech start-up, has secured £6 million in seed investment. The company’s CEO and co-founder, Iain Mackie, holds an MSc in Data Science from the University of Edinburgh. Jeff Dalton, a Chancellor’s Fellow at the School of Informatics, is Malted AI’s external Chief Scientific Advisor. The company specialises in building smaller, more focused AI models with greater performance at a fraction of the cost.
