About us

At MarFishEco we pride ourselves on being able to help clients better understand the business impacts of their current activities based on clearly, pre-defined criteria. This can include supply chain efficiencies, return on investments of new technologies or how current practices match up with sustainability standards. We often take a simple counterfactual approach in which we make comparisons between what actually happens and “what would happen if” scenarios. We perform in-depth SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunities, Threats) analyses and risk assessments to help guide clients towards a competitive edge by removing, minimizing or mitigating potential obstacles in their path to success. In this way, we help our clients make important decisions when it comes to their current expenditures, future investments, product portfolios etc, and how well they achieve either their own and / or externally imposed targets. For new technologies, processes or products, we help develop and implement projects with clear metrics to help clients easily assess where room for improvement may lie. The MFE team can help you design new monitoring protocols, analyze your data, provide periodic / mid-term performance reviews and plan strategy documentation for investors and stakeholders alike. Whether it is in person field visits or remote consultation, MFE has considerable experience undertaking monitoring and evaluation projects of varied sizes from single fisher projects through to international enterprises.

🌊 𝐄𝐔 𝐈𝐔𝐔 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧'𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐋𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐬 𝐊𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐬, 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐎𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐫🌊 We welcome some key points, but there are areas of concern. Here's our take: ✅ What We Like: • 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐔𝐔 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠: We're glad to see the strong stance against illegal fishing, but more resources will be crucial to fully implement current rules. • 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: It’s encouraging to see the emphasis on enforcing existing regulations like the Common Fisheries Policy and the Fisheries Control Regulation. • 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐔 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬: Stronger import controls are required to block products linked to IUU fishing and forced labour, ensure fair competition and protect EU consumers. • 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 (𝐒𝐅𝐏𝐀): The new generation of SFPA needs to be more transparent and fair, protecting local communities and pushing forward fisheries reforms. • 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐎𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐭: Pleased to see a focus on healthy oceans and an inclusive approach, involving coastal communities and small-scale fishers. • 𝐎𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 & 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲: We support investing in better understanding our ocean. • 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐲 (𝐁𝐁𝐍𝐉): We’re pleased to see the prioritisation of ratifying the BBNJ treaty. ❌ What Concerns Us: • 𝐍𝐨 𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐝: There’s no clarity on how the European Ocean Pact will be financed. • 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐄𝐔 𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬: Protecting the ocean and those who rely on it requires a holistic and global approach, with strong partnerships and coordination.  • 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐯𝐬. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬: Competitiveness is inherently tied to maintaining healthy assets, which can only be ensured through sustainable management. ⚠️ What to Watch Out For: • 𝐎𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: Separating the Environment and Oceans portfolios could isolate ocean protection from the European Green Deal. • 𝐄𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 (𝐂𝐅𝐏): We’re ready to engage in this evaluation and we want it to highlight solutions for a better implementation of existing anti-IUU fishing measures. • 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: We need to see policies turn into real actions. The Commission should demand clear reporting from Member States and prioritise enforcement of existing rules. • 🌊 Investing in Somalia's Fisheries🌍 📢 In July 2022, MarFishEco (MFE) embarked on a groundbreaking private investment project presenting a unique investment opportunity in Northern Africa. 🐟 Project Highlights: 📅 Year: 2022 🌍 Location: Africa 📈 Project: Fisheries Investment Opportunity  Photo: by Saacid Ahmed on Unsplash Summary: MFE's investment evaluations laid out plans to harness Somalia's abundant fish stocks, utilizing local vessels and establishing Somalia-based processing facilities. This strategic move from investors plans to harness the value derived from Somalia's waters and feed it directly back to local economies, fostering local fisheries capacity. Opportunity Overview: 🌊 Leverage Somalia's expansive coastline for a robust fisheries investment. 🚫 Address challenges posed by foreign ‘regulated’ and illegal fishing and a lack of local processing. Current Scenario: 🐠 Rich pelagic species remain untapped due to limited fisheries sector development. 🇨🇳 Chinese vessels granted licenses, sparking concerns about equitable profit distribution. Investment Proposal: 🚢 Purchase 3 pelagic freezer trawlers and 1 longliner to optimize catch capabilities. 🏭 Establish a state-of-the-art processing and canning plant in Mogadishu. Reasoning: 💡 Exploit untapped small pelagics and tuna resources for sustainable growth. 💰 Strategic focus on small pelagics aligns with rising USD-driven fish prices. 🌍 De-risk tuna investment, while establishing markets in the EU and Japan. Additional Details: 🌐 Set up vessels and processing plants adhering to EU standards for global market access. 📜 Compliance with Somali government and Indian Ocean Tuna Commission regulations. 🎓 Staged crew training to transition to a full Somali crew within 3 years. • LinkedIn Post: 🌊Client/Collaborators: Nexus, Steer  📍 Location: United Kingdom 📅 Year: 2022 🔄 Project: North Shields Ferry Landing Relocation Photo by Paula Guerreiro on Unsplash 🚢 Collaboration Update 🌊 📚 Project Summary: In 2022, Steer, in partnership with MarFishEco, undertook a crucial project commissioned by Nexus. Our mission was to create an Economic Value report for the Shields Ferry service, connecting North and South Shields at the Tyne's mouth. The report primarily addressed the proposal to replace the North Shields ferry landing, considering two options: 🏖️ Option 1: Relocating it to the Fish Quay to promote leisure and ensure uninterrupted service during construction. 🚢 Option 2: Constructing a new jetty at the current site, necessitating a service halt. 🎣 Key Concern: The potential impact on the local fishing industry. MarFishEco assessed the current value of local fisheries operations and evaluated the relocation's effects on the local fleet. • 🌊 Exciting News from MarFishEco! 🐟 Delighted to announce the delivery of a technical report by MarFishEco (MFE), commissioned by Oceana, focusing on the most over-exploited stocks in the Northeast Atlantic. 🌐📈 The report offered a detailed overview of the status and exploitation of these stocks, analyzing current management measures, providing recovery recommendations, and outlining a multi-year strategy. 📊🔄 Depleted stocks are a vital public resource, and their recovery is crucial for a healthy marine ecosystem and long-term benefits to coastal communities. Urgent efforts were emphasized, especially considering the impact of climate change on fish populations' resilience. 🌍🐠 Despite commitments to sustainable fishing, recent ICES data revealed ongoing depletion of key fish stocks in the Northeast Atlantic. Critically depleted stocks included West of Scotland cod, Celtic Sea cod, North Sea cod, among others. ICES have advised strong reductions or zero catches. 🚨📉 MFE's report, targeting decision-makers, NGOs, industry reps, and journalists, served as a foundation for policy briefings, infographics, and communication products. It utilized official data and peer-reviewed publications. 📈🎨 The UK's departure from the EU presents an opportunity for a new approach, outlined in the Trade and Cooperation Agreement, allowing for multi-year strategies and guidelines for Total Allowable Catches. 🇬🇧🤝🇪🇺 For more information or to explore the full report, reach out to MarFishEco at projects@marfisheco.com. Whilst interesting I’m a bit wary of this infographic. I understand the point and agree with the “direction” advocacy-wise but a real tangible conclusion / recommendation from this is tough. I’d be keen to hear what people have to say about this one. What should we take from this?
