👩🔬 Transforming Lab Efficiency: How Swedish Hospital is Overcoming Workforce Shortages with Innovation and Automation Patients often face delays in diagnosis and treatment due to the dependency on lab results, making speed and quality crucial in medical laboratories. However, the shortage of skilled workers poses a significant challenge. The Laboratory at Swedish Hospital in Chicago addressed this by implementing innovative solutions under the leadership of Susan Dawson, who has over 40 years of experience. Focusing on automation and redefining roles to improve turnaround times, reduce errors, and alleviate staff burden. The hospital introduced new automated lab management systems to enhance productivity and data management, optimizing workflow and better utilizing staff. Laboratory technicians play a vital role in clinical decision-making, with 70% of decisions based on lab results. However, the U.S. faces a 7% vacancy rate in this field, leading to stress and potential errors due to excessive workloads. To combat this, nontechnical staff were hired to handle routine tasks, allowing technicians to focus on complex lab work. Automation further streamlined processes, reducing manual touchpoints and stress, and improving morale. As a result, the lab achieved smoother workflows and faster turnaround times, ultimately benefiting patient care.
