Oxford Nanopore Technologies is proud to collaborate with the ELRIN consortium to explore the potential of Oxford Nanopore sequencing as a first-line diagnostic tool for #rarediseases and familial #cancers. The European Long Read Innovation Network (ELRIN)—a pioneering initiative led by the University Tübingen and experts across Europe — aims to advance whole genome Oxford #Nanopore sequencing (#WGS) for potential clinical diagnostics, addressing significant unmet healthcare needs. With 21 labs across 11 countries, ELRIN will help establish best practices, generate reference datasets, and assess the feasibility of Oxford Nanopore sequencing in routine clinical testing. Why is this important? We highlight this on #RareDiseaseDay2025 because... -Up to 50% of #raredisease patients remain undiagnosed with current sequencing methods—impacting millions of lives globally. -Early & complex cancer syndromes remain unsolved, highlighting the need for new approaches in genomic medicine. Biotechnology Research
Our goal is to enable the analysis of anything, by anyone, anywhere.
About us
Our goal is to enable the analysis of anything, anywhere, by anyone. We have developed the world’s first and only nanopore DNA and RNA sequencing platform. It’s a new generation of sequencing technology — the only one to offer: scalability to portable or ultra-high throughput formats, real-time data delivery, and the ability to elucidate rich biological data. We are aiming to disrupt the way that biological analyses are currently performed, and open up new applications that have a profound, positive impact on society. Our devices offer real-time analysis, for rapid insights, in fully scalable formats — from pocket to population scale — and the technology is being used in more than 100 countries worldwide. Founded in 2005 as a spin-out from the University of Oxford, the company now employs more than 600 people from multiple disciplines including nanopore science, molecular biology and applications, informatics, engineering, electronics, manufacturing and commercialisation. The management team, led by CEO Dr Gordon Sanghera, has a track record of delivering disruptive technologies to the market.

Rapid sequencing meets real-time response – critical insights from the 2025 Sudan ebolavirus outbreak in Uganda. What does a world-class genomic response look like? When a healthcare worker in Kampala presented with symptoms in January, Uganda’s scientists moved fast. Within days, full genome data for Sudan ebolavirus was generated on site—even before lab confirmation. A remarkable achievement. https://lnkd.in/e9EgEXuA Using a field-ready nanopore sequencing protocol, the Uganda Virus Research Institute team identified the virus, traced its evolutionary origins, and confirmed its link to earlier outbreaks—all in near real time. As Peter van Heusden (SANBI) put it: “What we and our colleagues in Uganda managed – and I think it’s a genomic world speed record of sorts – was in part down to the technology, but it was also the readiness.” https://lnkd.in/encw85SW This wasn’t just a proof-of-concept. It was a demonstration of how world-class standards of care and surveillance can be delivered—with the right infrastructure, local expertise, and collaborative preparedness. Uganda and South Africa just showed the world how it’s done. The switch is ON.
