Day 1 of #MASTSASM2024 was jam-packed! An introduction to the role of Chief Scientific Advisor Marine to The Scottish Government, the 50 year milestone of long-term monitoring in #Orkney and Charlotte Miskin-Hymas presented the new ways to search for and access UK marine data showing the newest MEDIN portal updates. Today, on Day 2, we look forward to the Biogeochemistry session and Energy and Infrastructure plus lots of inspiring science presentations to come. ✨ MASTS Scotland

MEDIN are excited to announce the official release of the new MEDIN Non-Spatial Discovery Metadata Standard, a stakeholder driven solution that addresses the needs of those managing marine data types that fall outside the geospatial framework. MEDIN defines a non-spatial dataset as marine data that are independent of any specific geographic location. The new MEDIN Non-Spatial Standard is the first of its kind, placing MEDIN at the forefront of data accessibility for non-geographic marine data. The standard is now available for download from the MEDIN website (https://hubs.la/Q02WtbJC0) and MEDIN GitHub (https://hubs.la/Q02WtfY90). The MEDIN Discovery Metadata Standard previously focused exclusively on geospatial data, which made it unsuitable for non-spatial data types, such as socio-economic data or experimental laboratory results data. Without an appropriate standard, these data could not be made discoverable through the MEDIN Portal. The key distinction between the geospatial and non-spatial standards is the removal of mandatory elements specifically tied to geographic information, such as the 'Geographic Bounding Box' and 'Spatial Reference System'. In addition to publishing the new non-spatial standard, the MEDIN Portal has been adapted to publish non-geographic datasets and the MEDIN Schematron has also been updated to validate non-spatial metadata records. Looking ahead, we are focused on further integrating the non-spatial standard into MEDIN’s infrastructure. The ongoing development of the MEDIN Online Discovery Metadata Editor will soon enable users to generate non-geographic dataset records for direct publication in the MEDIN Portal. We are proud to share this important advancement with you and look forward to continuing MEDIN’s vision to ensure that all forms of marine data, whether spatial or non-spatial, are FAIR - Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable. #metadatamonday Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Maritime and Coastguard Agency, NERC: Natural Environment Research Council, Met Office, UK Hydrographic Office, Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru / Natural Resources Wales, The Crown Estate, OceanWise Ltd, Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute, Llywodraeth Cymru / Welsh Government, JNCC, National Oceanography Centre, The Scottish Government, @Department of Agriculture Environment and Rural Affairs - Northern Ireland, Crown Estate Scotland

Scanned images of historical UK #tide #gauge ledgers from several sites along the #Mersey Estuary and the #Thames Estuary (1832-1987). 🌊 This dataset consists of ~18,000 scanned images (available to download in .jpg, but high resolution .tiff images are also available) from historical UK tide gauge ledgers. In 1993, the British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) acquired the registers from the THE MERSEY DOCKS AND HARBOUR COMPANY LIMITED (MDHC). These registers were in the form of large, leather-bound volumes dating back to 1853 for Hilbre Island and 1857 for Georges Pier. Offshore Wind Evidence and Change Programme, Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) Modelling Workshop from 2023 is #DatasetOfTheWeek To advance the understanding of anthropogenic electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from subsea power cables, an interdisciplinary expert workshop was facilitated by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) and The Scottish Government at the Royal institution, London on 17 and 18 January 2023. This workshop project forms part of the Offshore Wind Evidence and Change programme, led by The Crown Estate in partnership with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. A series of key outputs and recommendations were developed, leading to actions to enhance the understanding of EMFs emitted by subsea power cables. For ease, they are separated into recommendations that can easily be applied now and those that require research and development, although some may be easily actionable. Collectively, these recommendations will facilitate continued progress towards a clearer understanding of the cable EMFs and potential impacts on species.
