Earlier this week, City AM reported that London and New York continue to top the list for the title of the world’s top financial centre, with New York remaining in the top spot 14 points ahead. The index is compiled using 143 factors provided by third parties, included World Bank, OECD and United Nations. The market in London faced difficulties last year, with dealmaking falling to a post-financial crisis low and a number of brands opting to publicly list overseas. Along with a number of factors, interest rate cuts have bolstered appetite for deals in the city and there seems to be a better sentiment towards deal making overall. If you’d like to discuss the nature of the market, on both sides of the Atlantic, reach out to one of our consultants for a confidential conversation today. Really interesting to see a continued trend in the private credit space. Amid record-breaking fundraises by the biggest players, based on my conversations, banks are increasingly looking to carve out a larger share of the direct lending market with two main strategies: 1. Utilizing Asset Management Platforms: Earlier this year, BNP Paribas and more recently HSBC were in the spotlight for ramping up their direct lending efforts by using their asset management arms to compete for mid-market deals. 2. Partnering with Direct Lending Funds: Banks are also continuing to partner with existing funds to co-invest or leverage their expertise in deal sourcing. Some notable alliances from this year include Lloyds Bank & Oaktree Capital and AGL Credit Management & Barclays. Amongst this increased competition, talented individuals and strong teams are crucial to driving continued success. So if you’re a candidate interested in new opportunities, reach out so we can have a chat. If you’re a bank or fund with hiring needs, feel free to reach out as I’m working with a strong network of exceptional junior and senior candidates looking for their next move!

On Monday, a number of news outlets, including The Irish Times, reported that the Federal Reserve are expected to keep interest rates steady but to tee up a cut in September. They reported that US inflation has taken a “favourable turn”, lowering borrowing costs and softening the labour market. The meeting on Wednesday will serve as an “important platform to further tee up a monetary policy pivot as early as September”. Economists expect the FOMC to acknowledge “it is more confident about its handle on inflation” and “its readiness to lower rates”.
