The future of fungi with Rhizocore Technologies - an applied mycology startup base Roslin Innovation Centre, building the world’s largest commercial fungal strain library for the discovery, protection and utilisation of fungal biodiversity for environmental and social benefit. Rhizocore has a forestry product on the market using fungi to grow healthier, more resilient forests that are less susceptible to drought and that sequester more carbon. The company is now researching the potential application of fungi to tackle environmental pollution (mycoremediation) and has two Postdoctoral Research Associate opportunities, one in collaboration with The James Hutton Institute in Aberdeen and the other Harper Adams University in England. The Moredun Group announce an exciting development in Equine Grass Sickness (EGS) case reporting. EGS is a devastating and complex disease of equines, which unfortunately can occur anywhere in the UK, where sadly 80% of animals suffering from it will die. In a new approach for answers, the Equine Grass Sickness Fund (EGSF) and Moredun Research Institute (MRI) launched a new project three years ago, designed to widen the research approach, engage with vets and horse owners and, importantly to establish a sample biobank and online case reporting system to improve surveillance of the disease and allow research to advance. Considerable progress is being made in all these areas, and Moredun report the launch of a new, real-time case reporting system and associated analytics dashboard based on anonymised EGS case reports. Yesterday we attended the official launch of a partnership between Edinburgh College and Doctoral College UK at the Midlothian Campus. This new collaborative partnership between the two esteemed educational institutions will bring post graduate students to the area, unlocking research, collaboration and innovation opportunities for students, local schools and businesses in Midlothian. Midlothian Council’s Economic Development Service played an instrumental role in the development of the partnership by realising the unique potential a collaboration between the two entities could deliver for Midlothian and Edinburgh, and introducing the parties. Scientists at The James Hutton Institute are leading a nationwide soil sampling campaign to help the ECHO project to collect 16,500 samples across Europe and are seeking “ECHO Ambassadors” from across Scotland to help complete the mission. Thousands of images of hedgehogs and other wildlife living at Easter Bush Campus have been captured as part of the National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme. Staff and student volunteers set up 30 camera traps around the campus between July and August, which recorded images of hedgehogs, stoats, badgers and deer.
