We were thrilled to see Mo-Sys’ Technical Director, and Chair of the SMPTE Camera Tracking Committee, James Uren, unveil the much-anticipated OpenTrackIO initiative on Friday, at this year’s SMPTE Media Technology Summit. OpenTrackIO is a first of its kind open-sourced project, setting a new standard for Virtual Production camera tracking that has already been adopted by Epic Games, Mo-Sys Engineering Ltd and Stage Precision GmbH. Developed by James and the RIS-OSVP (Rapid Industry Solutions, On-Set Virtual Production) Camera Tracking team, the new protocol introduces a wide range of advancements since the release of FreeD, including: ▪️ wider media workflow compatibility ▪️ improved tracking precision for position and rotation ▪️ unified lens data formats ▪️ sub-frame synchronisation ▪️ human-readable formatting Many are already anticipating OpenTrackIO to set new benchmarks for production workflows, and with its open-source availability, this latest development in precision Virtual Production camera tracking is expected to achieve a rapid adoption rate across the entire Virtual Production industry. Mo-Sys has long been committed to sharing it’s knowledge with the wider VP community, supplying lens files, free of charge, and delivering industry-leading VP training programmes worldwide through our Mo-Sys Academy. Mo-Sys is always driving industry standards forward, and as we continue to support James and his SMTPE colleagues in their efforts, we can’t wait to see where their research will lead them next! It was a great pleasure to participate and moderate the MIPCOM panel exploring new technology innovations within the creative entertainment content space. Florian Gallier was joined on-stage by Martijn Raadgever from Banijay Entertainment who shared insight around shows like Big Brother, explaining how they are utilising new tech to push boundaries and improve production efficiency. And ahead of its world premiere Gergely Takács of Spectral Studios discussed the growing popularity of LED virtual production, studio investments and uncovered their incredible work on Rise of the Raven. There was a lot of interest in Mo-Sys' approach to innovation, production efficiency and our new tools for content creation across film and broadcast applications. It is always a great pleasure to collaborate with Asako Tomura and Sony. Thank you very much for the opportunity! Great to see our VisionMax fallback tracking innovation being put through its paces by team at CoPilot Co., with impressive results. The secondary tracking attachment supports StarTracker Max’s continuous tracking in unmapped environments. VisionMax allows the camera to move under objects, into areas that have not been prepared with tracking stars and into scene elements such as vehicles, for even more flexible Virtual Production shooting. VisionMax uses vSLAM algorithms to take over tracking duties when necessary, using data fusion to seamlessly handoff back to star tracking once StarTracker Max has re-acquired enough stars to calculate its position.
