Kicks off across multiple states in Nigeria this week and will continue until next week. #Hypertension and #diabetes are major public health issues in Nigeria, with both conditions showing high and rising prevalence rates.Together both contribute significantly to the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Nigeria. #NCDs account for 27% of annual deaths! #Hypertension: Approximately 30–35% of adults in Nigeria are estimated to have hypertension. Prevalence rates vary across urban and rural areas, with urban areas generally reporting higher rates due to factors like lifestyle changes, diet, and stress. 👉🏾Studies indicate that many cases remain undiagnosed, making it a leading risk factor for stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure. #Diabetes: The prevalence of diabetes in Nigeria is estimated at about 4-5% of the adult population, though this figure may be higher due to underdiagnosis and limited access to healthcare services. 👉🏾 Diabetes rates are also increasing, particularly type 2 diabetes, which is often related to lifestyle factors such as diet, physical inactivity, and obesity. 👉🏾👉🏾This increases place additional strain on healthcare systems due to complications like kidney disease, vision loss, and nerve damage. 👉🏾👉🏾👉🏾The growing incidence calls for concerted efforts in public health education, early screening, and accessible healthcare interventions, which are integral to improving outcomes and reducing long-term healthcare costs in the country.
