Yesterday it was Demo Day for the Shell #StartUpEngine UK cohort of 2024 – held at the London Stock Exchange Our 12 incredible cleantech startups made us very proud pitching to a room full of investors and corporates. A special thank you to our panel – Claire Curry Jenny Tooth OBE and Parminder Kohli and our excellent moderator and Shell StartUp Engine alumnus Beena Sharma. The programme started back in May and since then we’ve run dozens of workshops, hundreds of 121 coaching and mentoring sessions, numerous visits to Shell operational sites and run many, many hours of pitch practise sessions. And all their work paid off: every single founder shone brightly yesterday! Now these startups are part of the global alumni for Shell Startup Engine. We remain committed to help them succeed – and I know our amazing 120+ Shell mentors involved in the programme have no intention of losing touch with these brilliant cleantech founders. We are pleased to announce that Innovate UK has awarded £3.5 million to nine groundbreaking projects as part of the CLIMATES (Circular critical materials supply chains) programme, led by Innovate UK. 🎉 These projects will explore innovative ways to secure the UK’s supply chain of critical Rare Earth Elements (REEs) — vital components for green technologies like electric vehicles and wind turbines. 🚗🔋 From extracting rare minerals from volcanic tuffs to recovering valuable elements from mining waste, each partnership is paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient supply chain. Very proud to welcome founders from this year’s Shell StartUp Engine UK up to St Fergus this week to meet the #ACORN carbon capture project team and get a full tour of the facility (in the Aberdeenshire sun no less!). The scale of the operation, which processes >11% of the UK’s gas every day, is mind-blowing. It provides a glimpse into the future for our startups, several of whom will require large-scale processing facilities to capture carbon and methane. Then it was off to Shell’s SilverFin office in Aberdeen City to meet the energy transition team and some of the #Shellmentors who have been supporting the founders. An excellent presentation on Shell UK’s emissions challenge and progress to date by Jingyi Zhang, provided context to some great discussions where our startups can help. Getting access to Shell’s operational sites, whether that’s Mossmorran, St Fergus and EV forecourts, enables our #startups to see first-hand how things work today, explore use-cases and pain points, as well as how their technologies will need to integrate. It’s all part of the unique startup accelerator experience we offer with Shell StartUp Engine UK. Amazing week supporting #entrepreneurs with an outstanding couple of days this week in Shell Centre with the founders from this year’s Shell StartUp Engine UK.   Quality time with Shell mentors to plan and prioritise activity over the second half of the programme – new connections, opportunities to test and validate hypotheses and investigation of use cases within Shell and its partners.   Fireside chats with Shell Scenarios and Shell Energy to provide broader context to our journey to #NetZero and different perspectives on our startups – thank you Richard Baker and Greg Joiner.   We ran a session to get the #startups talking about what they’ve been working on with their mentors – I was blown away by co-authored documents, workshops, site visits, technical reviews – as well as talk of the Holy Grail…pilots with Shell!   Kauan Von Novack, Startupbootcamp’s group CEO, joined the startups in Shell Centre for an #AskMeAnything to share his journey as 17X founder expounding the unique advantages of being early-stage – and how to maximise these ahead of scaling.   We ended the two days with the startups pitching to Shell Ventures – great to hear the founders take Q&A and listen to feedback which will be vital as we hit the road to Demo Day on November 7th.   If you’re interested in how Shell StartUp Engine UK could help your business grow, we’re running a five week online Pre-accelerator aimed at clean energy-related startups from mid-October. To join our wait-list, contact me or Adam Forbes.   Thanks so far to all the incredible Shell mentors involved in the programme, our delivery partner Startupbootcamp and to the outstanding experts who have run workshops and provided one-to-one coaching to our founders.
