If you know me, you know that in the early days of Morta, I spent a lot of time talking about the importance of moving from static documents into structured data. The prime example of that was digitising exchange information requirements to make them machine-readable so we could assure models easily (This was a few years before IDS became a thing!) I was convinced that assuring data would be the next big thing in our industry. But, ironically, what really propelled Morta forward was... tracking files. About three to four years into our journey, I met James Franklin, who introduced me to the concept of information delivery plans. He’d seen what Morta was capable of, thanks to the work Rob Jackson had done for the Ministry of Justice UK. But James had another use-case—he thought Morta could replacing Excel-based Information delivery Plans at Kier Group and, ideally, integrating with Viewpoint. It was the perfect use case, and I couldn't believe I had missed it for so long. The realisation was a turning point for Morta. As it turned out, while I was telling people they should be tracking their data, they were still battling to keep track of their files. It’s a lesson that has shaped how we built and evolved Morta, focusing on what our clients need to unlock the potential of data as they free up time! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- P.S. Over the next few weeks, I'll be posting my learnings and opinions from 6 years of running Morta in the lead-up to our virtual community day on November 25th. We'll be joined by 20+ of the most inspiring people in the industry who are building a digital construction industry brick by brick. Join us 😊

3 weeks until our virtual community day! 🥳 Since founding Morta in 2018, our mission has been to empower teams to replace manual, Excel-based workflows with connected information hubs. Initially, I didn't consider that what we were starting could be a place for people to connect, discuss processes, challenges and how they are resolving them. But over time, I noticed that I learnt most from our community members. Everything from their language, to the problems that need to be solved, to how they are solving them and how they are approaching change management. As we thought about how to celebrate our anniversary, we realised that the best way to do that was by celebrating and connecting our community! Thats why on on November 25th, we’re celebrating Morta’s 6th anniversary with a Virtual Community Day, where many of the people I've personally learnt or been inspired by will be joining. This free event will showcase how they are building a digital built environment and construction industry #brickbybrick. A Love Letter (or Something Like That) to Excel 💌 Let’s talk about the tool I typically criticise: Excel. I always say I’m not the first to criticise Excel (and certainly won’t be the last), but I’m often surprised by how many detractors overlook why it’s everywhere. I was recently chatting with a Morta prospect, and we likened Excel to a drug: habits have formed over decades. It’s familiar. Just like a doctor wanting to wean someone off a powerful drug, anyone who wants to replace Excel has to understand what makes it so indispensable. Here are my thoughts on what makes Excel the dominant technology in the industry: 1️⃣ The Ultimate Swiss Army Knife You want a sustainability tracker? Build one. A cost tracker? Done. Track compliance for the Building Safety Act? Sorted. Need a cash flow model or an estimation system? Excel can be whatever you need. You can mold Excel to fit your workflows, rather than having to fit into it's workflows. 2️⃣ It’s Familiar and Ubiquitous Excel is practically a universal language. Whether you’re fresh out of school or leading a construction company, you’ve had your hands on an Excel sheet. It’s straightforward enough to get started without a manual, yet holds remarkable depth for those who want to dig deeper. It’s everywhere, and that matters for collaboration. Excel’s simplicity, ease of sharing, and compatibility mean teams can still get the data they need—without needing sophisticated (and expensive) systems. 3️⃣ Affordable and Almost ‘Free’ For what it offers, Excel’s cost is tough to beat. In many companies, it’s a standard, low-cost overhead, but even where it’s not, it gives incredible value for money. Compared to specialised tools, it’s economical, and that’s a massive advantage, especially for smaller teams or businesses. 4️⃣ A Gateway to Data Skills and Automation Excel has an undeniable role as a stepping stone into data and automation. Its simple functions make users feel like data wizards without needing to code. I’ll never forget how smart I felt using VLOOKUPs back when I worked on cost-loading and estimation exercises (and they are satisfying to this day). It’s powerful to be able to pull up data, craft conditional formulas, or build pivot tables on the fly. When it comes to quick analysis, Excel remains hard to beat. So Where Does That Leave Me? Yes, I’ll keep calling out Excel’s limitations—there’s a lot out there better suited to the complex needs of today’s projects. But, I'm a big fan of giving credit where credit is due: Excel may not be perfect, but it’s earned its place in history. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- P.S.
