Tiny project, big impact. MCW has completed alterations to the Fisher Building at St John's College, Cambridge to open a pedestrian (and fire tender access) route through from Queens Road to River Court. Two pairs of large, stainless steel framed, glazed doors were removed between the Fisher Building and New Court. Matching Portland Stone was used for the new wall and bench enclosing the ground floor. One of the south facing windows was converted into a pair of doors, so visitors to the Fisher Building can enjoy the gardens in the summer months. The feedback: people cannot believe it was not always this way. Coulson Building Group Ridge and Partners LLP
About us
MCW architects is a Cambridge based architectural practice, designing and delivering award-winning projects across the UK. Set up by Colin Moses, Murdoch Cameron and Peter Williams in 2011, we have a particularly strong reputation in higher education, a sector in which our experience stretches back over 25 years, where clients have returned to us time and time again for our innovative designs and long-term commitment to our clients' estates. Our projects span a variety of sectors from further education and headquarters to residential developments. We share an ambition to create uplifting places which are responsive and responsible to their context and community. We believe in adopting simple, best value strategies to achieve low energy, high performance, socially responsible design and our work has met exemplary low carbon and low energy targets. We believe that architecture is all about people. Our practice is built around the belief that making architecture should be a joyful and enriching creative experience. This begins with our own studio and extends to our clients and collaborators, resulting in an architecture that is inherently expressive of the people who commission, use and design it. Our current clients include University of Cambridge, Anglia Ruskin University, University of Northampton, University of Nottingham, University of Hertfordshire, the University of Bedfordshire, Cardiff University, Colchester Institute, MAGPAS Air Ambulance, research clients, and a number of private developers.

Delighted that St John's College, Cambridge Buttery project has been featured as a double page spread in the September/October issue of Higher Education Estates Magazine. Heather Hancock, Master of St John’s, said: “We have gained bright, warm and welcoming space for our day-to-day lives in College. We are privileged to learn, live and meet in such a beautiful and inspiring environment, and this latest development is a worthy addition to the fabric of the College.”

Great discussion tonight at the Purcell's Decarbonisation of Your Heritage Buildings event. Lots of audience engagement which made the discussion much more interesting. The buttery, bar and cafe project at St John's College, Cambridge, lead by MCW architects with Purcell as conservation architects, is a great example of how to upgrade listed fabric while protecting the heritage and character of the building. Our industry has learned a lot about the subject in the last few years, and there are now tools to help clients and design teams to make the right decisions when upgrading and decarbonising heritage buildings.

Our next generation of architects at the CFCI event last week.
I was fortunate to attend the CFCI's inaugural Next Gen Autumn Dinner on Friday evening with my colleagues Alba and Javier on behalf of MCW architects. We had a great time making new connections and catching up with those we have worked with from around the city, in the stunning surroundings of Jesus College, Cambridge. Thanks to Colin Wood (AECOM) for the inspiring keynote address, and the entire CFCI team for organising a brilliant evening. Cambridge Forum for the Construction Industry (CFCI)

Hey, what’s the big idea? Why keep ideas hidden, when the world is ready to listen? You know you’ve got something important to say – something that could really make a difference. But you’re not sure how to take the first step, to gather momentum, to build a ground swell. We’ve been working with MCW architects to take these steps to effect positive change in the built environment. Here's how we’ve helped to get their ideas out into the world and position them for long-term success. The Labour Party's life sciences strategy isn't just about policy - it's about creating spaces for innovation and growth. Hien Nguyen, one of our associate directors, shares insights on EG how the built environment will be crucial to realising the potential of the UK's life sciences sector. From scalability to sustainable design, architecture is at the heart of driving this transformative agenda.

Our Director peter williams wrote a postcard from Berneray Island:
All that really matters about architecture on the Outer Hebrides is the windows, as the spectacular natural landscape eclipses all else, writes peter williams of MCW architects in his postcard from Berneray Island https://ow.ly/gJHW50SX7nc

We are delighted that Anglia Ruskin University Creative Quarter has been granted planning permission. MCW have led the design process, as part of an AtkinsRéalis multi-disciplinary team, for this complex project that will provide space to collocate the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Science through a refurbishment of the Ruskin and Coslett buildings and the construction of a new Media Building to house film, TV, and music studios. This is an important project for the development of the East Road campus, stemming from our masterplan in 2018, and demonstrates ARU's support for the Arts and Creative Industries. The scheme also incorporates measures as part of an ongoing decarbonisation programme and the reuse of existing buildings is a vital part of the University's low carbon thinking. The scheme is targeting BREEAM Excellent. MCW are now working with Morgan Sindall Construction on the procurement and delivery of the project
