📢 A huge success for the annual EuLA safety seminar 🚨 This week, 4️⃣0️⃣ health and safety specialists from the lime industry gathered in Graz, Austria, for a dynamic workshop on visible felt leadership hosted by InterCal. The seminar was led by Rodolphe Nicolle, EuLA Secretary General, Lumen Florence, Health and Safety Director at IMA-Europe and Fabrice Foucart, EuLA Safety TF Chair. ⚠ 👏 🤝 📉 💡 We explored new approaches to dust management, safety strategies for modern fuels, and engaged in interactive workshops on leadership and safety communication. THE ANSWER: On Tuesday we asked 'if UK airport runways are made using hydrated lime in the asphalt to improve durability why can't UK highways be made with lime too?' The answer is, of course, they can and they should! UK asphalt producers are fully equipped to supply airport asphalts with hydrated lime as a component of the asphalt mix design so if the specification requires it, the supply chain can deliver it. Airport asphalts have historically been designed to the highest performance and durability specifications - and rightly so - hence the development of Marshall asphalts which commonly use hydrated lime in their mix designs. The basic concepts of the Marshall mix design method were originally developed by Bruce Marshall of the Mississippi Highway Department around 1939 and then refined by the US Army. Currently, the Marshall method is used in some capacity by about 38 US states and is the basis for UK Ministry of Defence runway asphalt specification. The Marshall mix was developed to cope with higher tyre pressures and larger aircraft, and a notable consequence is that the durability of the asphalt delivered longer intervals between maintenance and replacement, which is essential for today’s busy airports with high financial penalties from interruptions to aircraft traffic. THE ANSWER: This week we asked where hydrated lime in asphalt is already being used to deliver performance improvement on roads? The correct answer is both EU and USA highways - #hydratedlime has continuously been specified and used in asphalt mix designs for more than a century. According to the National Lime Association in the USA: "Lime has been used in hot mix asphalt (HMA) to reduce moisture sensitivity and 'stripping' since 1910 in the United States. While hydrated lime has long been an acknowledged anti-strip additive for asphalt pavements, recent studies confirm that lime imparts other important benefits: - It stiffens the binder and HMA to resist #rutting - It improves #toughness and resistance to fracture growth at low temperatures - It changes oxidation chemistry in the binder to reduce age #hardening - It alters clay fines to improve moisture #stability and #durability. And studies by the European Lime Association (EuLA), indicate the earliest European research into lime in asphalt was conducted sometime after 1945. Both the USA and the EU took much more interest in hydrated lime in asphalt after the oil crisis in the 1970’s caused issues around road performance related to the bitumen, and hydrated lime was mandated for inclusion in asphalt by the highways authorities in many states, to help them deliver more durable roads. The UK has drifted away from specifying hydrated lime in asphalt, despite the known benefits. The high chemistry additives that are widely used in all countries typically target either individual or just a few aspects to enhance desired asphalt characteristics. THE ANSWER: Earlier this week we asked "By what percentage can the addition of hydrated lime typically extend the service life of an asphalt road?" The answer is by up to 25%. Did you know that 👇 · 25% improvement means that instead of having to replace an asphalt road after 16 years, that road could have lasted up to 20 years before being replaced. · Enhanced lifespan supports #circularity · Enhanced lifespan means fewer interventions (and congestion), less carbon over time. Typically additions of 1-2% of hydrated lime are seen to achieve significant benefits.
