The National Energy System Operator (NESO)’s new independent analysis shows clean power by 2030 is achievable and desirable. The report confirms that the transition will drive economic growth, create good jobs and reduce our dependence on volatile international gas prices – delivering more affordable, green energy. Key findings include: 1. The Government can achieve its clean power by 2030 mission, but doing so will require bold, sustained actions and momentum 2. To make its vision a reality, the Government must reform market arrangements and investment support schemes 3. Becoming one of the first major economies to decarbonise will strengthen the UK’s climate leadership credentials As the report says, achieving the clean power mission will require us to do things differently. Rewriting the rules of the grid to allow private companies to build substations could play a key role in accelerating grid development while taking hundreds of millions of pounds off bills every year. By rethinking energy and economic policy, we can eradicate the main source of inflation, attract foreign capital, and supercharge economic growth, all while accelerating toward net zero targets. We remain committed to working closely with the Government and NESO to make Britain a clean energy superpower. Read more: https://lnkd.in/esxYuf8c

Last week, as commentators fixated on tax rises the Budget’s most economically transformational announcement received little attention. With the Chancellor’s new Investment Rule unlocking £100bn, the Government is now well positioned to make Britain a Clean Energy Superpower and crowd in significant additional private investment. We welcome the establishment of the vehicles for this investment, GB Energy and the National Wealth Fund. Designed to support the clean energy transition and green economy, these institutions invest through fiscally neutral loans or equity stakes – enabling the Government to turbocharge its ambitions. To position the UK as an energy transition powerhouse, the Chancellor could use these two institutions to set up joint public and private funds that accelerate the switch – for anything from grid investment to clean transport – leveraging taxpayer money to crowd in private investment. These energy transition acceleration funds could work in a 1x8x5 equity ratio: £3bn from the Treasury, followed by 8x in equity from businesses, and an additional 5x in debt, would raise £120bn of investment for innovation, as well as returns for all parties. That would include £40bn for the taxpayer in VAT and corporate taxes, offsetting the £40bn in tax rises revealed in last week’s Budget. We applaud the Chancellor’s Investment Rule and are proud to also play a leading role in accelerating the UK’s clean energy transition. Rt Hon Rachel Reeves https://lnkd.in/eU74A-rn

Yesterday marked a turning point for the UK’s clean energy transition, with the Chancellor putting sustainability, economic growth and investment at the centre of the Budget. However, much more work is needed to achieve the Government's goal of establishing the UK as a clean energy superpower.   Introducing a government guarantee to lenders’ first loss for those investing in the transition would be a good start. This could unlock billions of pounds of private sector investment and drive growth at no cost to the taxpayer.   Allocating the funds gained from both increasing the Oil and Gas Profits Levy and scrapping its investment allowance to Great British Energy could turbocharge the clean energy transition – by financing clean energy project development and sending positive market signals to investors.   With Capital Gains Tax rising for most assets, reassuring the market that the exemption for clean energy investments will remain in place will help redirect funds from oil and gas schemes into clean alternatives. Removing this exemption would put investment in UK renewables at risk and slow the energy transition.   We commend the Chancellor for making ‘maximising the growth benefits of Labour’s clean energy mission’ one of the key pillars of yesterday’s Budget and remain committed to playing a leading role in this.

It may sound like something out of a science fiction novel, but experimenting with artificial rain to reduce air pollution is one of the latest initiatives taken by Indian authorities to tackle this environmental emergency. The technique involves releasing chemicals into the atmosphere to create clouds and encourage precipitation, aiming to clean the air of pollutants. Without decisive action to reduce emissions at source, air pollution is set to remain a major issue not only in India but globally. In the new episode - AIR - of MISSION EARTH, Angelica De Vito and Luciano Canova take an in-depth look at the solutions being proposed worldwide to combat air pollution, from legislative measures to cutting-edge technologies. 🌍 The episode, like the entire series, was produced with NatPower UK, in collaboration with NatPower Group, showcasing our mutual commitment to delivering real, lasting environmental solutions for communities and nature. This initiative underscores NatPower UK's dedication to addressing global environmental challenges through innovative approaches. Today is World Food Day, reminding us of the importance of farming and agriculture. We all need farmers at least three times a day, but extreme weather, increasing costs, and changes to subsidies are making farming an even tougher game to be in. Fortunately, the clean energy transition provides key opportunities to future-proof farming – leasing land for solar panels, wind turbines and battery storage provides a substantial additional source of revenue, safeguarding the livelihoods of future generations. We are proud to work with farmers across the country to deliver win-wins for both food and energy security. Find out more about how we support farmers: natpower.uk/landowners

Chile became the first country in the world to recognise and punish ecocide as a crime by incorporating the definition into its national penal code. Furthermore, if accepted by the International Criminal Court (ICC), the definition of ecocide could become the fifth crime recognised by the ICC, alongside crimes against humanity, war crimes, crimes of aggression and genocide. This change would impose new legal responsibilities on company directors, heads of funding agencies and insurance companies involved in environmentally damaging activities. To find out more, in the new episode of MISSIONE TERRA, Angelica De Vito and Luciano Canova explore the issue and explain what soil degradation is, why it can be extremely dangerous for people and what solutions are available, including in Italy, in some areas such as Terra dei Fuochi in Campania. 🌍 The episode, like the whole series, was made with NatPower Group in collaboration with NatPower UK, reflecting our shared commitment to making a real impact on communities and nature.
