We're thrilled to share that our paper ✨ Getting the message right on #naturebasedsolutions to climate change ✨ was the most-viewed article in #GlobalChangeBiology 2024! The message remains more relevant than ever ➡️ 🌎 Nature-based Solutions have the potential to help address climate change while supporting people and biodiversity locally... But only when implemented with 4 key principles for effective, ethical and sustainable #NbS: 1️⃣ NbS are not a substitute for the rapid phase out of fossil fuels and must not delay urgent action to decarbonize our economies. 2️⃣ NbS involve the protection, restoration or management of a wide range of natural and semi‐natural ecosystems; the sustainable management of aquatic systems and working lands; or the creation of novel ecosystems in and around cities or across the wider landscape. 3️⃣ NbS are designed, implemented, managed and monitored by or in partnership with Indigenous Peoples and local communities through a process that fully respects and champions local rights and knowledge, and generates local benefits. 4️⃣ NbS support or enhance biodiversity, that is, the diversity of life from the level of the gene to the level of the ecosystem. Meanwhile, our 2020 paper 'Mapping the effectiveness of nature-based solutions for #ClimateChangeAdaptation', ranked as the 5th most-viewed article. 👉 Check out the #NbSGuidelines and explore the papers here: https://lnkd.in/enSJAbNi

Listen to NbSI's Aline Soterroni and Nathalie Seddon on why 'Net Zero needs Nature & Nature needs Net Zero' 🌿🌏 Recording now available! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e5cUM2_w Many thanks to Oxford Net Zero for hosting us on their 'Reality of Net Zero' series
Earlier this month, Dr Aline Soterroni and Professor Nathalie Seddon gave a talk on "Net Zero Needs Nature and Nature Needs Net Zero" as part of our "Reality of Net Zero" seminar series. They covered what is and is not a nature-based solution, the meaning of biodiversity, deforestation in Brazil, and so much more. The recording of their talk is now available on our YouTube channel: https://lnkd.in/eC5mZ555 You can also see their slides here: https://lnkd.in/eMGxHxZq Thank you so much to all of our excellent speakers throughout the series and to everyone who attended! New research! Diverse tropical forests sequester more carbon than monocultures 🌳 Celebrating International Day of Forests, we're delighted to share a new paper, co-authored by NbSI’s Audrey Constance Wagner, showing how tree diversity can improve climate mitigation potential and resilience in tropical planted forests. “Tree diversity significantly increased aboveground carbon stocks and fluxes, with a 57% higher gain in aboveground tree carbon in five-species mixtures compared to monocultures 16 years after planting” 🔎 The study was conducted over 16 years at the Sardinilla site in Panama - the oldest tropical tree diversity experiment globally. These findings reinforce the crucial importance of prioritising tree diversity in tropical forest restoration initiatives. 🌳 Halting deforestation is the single most important step Brazil can take to achieving net zero by 2050 #IntlForestDay2025 Protecting forests also means protecting the wellbeing of people and biodiversity who depend on them as life-support systems, from regulating water cycles to sustaining food security and livelihoods. #ForestDay Forests play a critical role in mitigating climate change by acting as carbon sinks. Research led by NbSI's Aline Soterroni finds that #naturebasedsolutions, primarily stopping deforestation and scaling up native vegetation restoration, could contribute to 80% of Brazil’s #netzero pledge.
