I had an inspiring visit to Kingsdale Head Farm with Rosie Snowden earlier in the week as her team surveyed plant species on a peatland restoration site. Kingsdale Head is a 608 hectare (1,503 acre) upland farm in the Yorkshire Dales. It was truly buzzing with life...pollinators, caterpillars, countless other invertebrates, frogs, bilberries, cranberries, birds and lots of walkers enjoying the beautiful landscape. I was inspired to walk one small site with Rosie and find clear signs of recovery as we explored the restoration interventions. Thanks to Jamie the land manager and the farm owners, for their passion and drive which is demonstrating how quickly nature can regenerate when facilitated by restoration and management programmes. 'The land at Kingsdale Head, like much of the Yorkshire Dales, has been subject to heavy sheep grazing as well as land drainage over many years, which has had a significant impact on the plant and wildlife on the site. The first steps of regeneration began in 2011 when the previous owner entered a Higher Level Stewardship scheme to reduce sheep grazing pressure, as well as starting the process of woodland creation.' 'The farm consists of around 450 hectares (1,112 acres) of peatland including blanket bog on deep peat as well as wet heathland, fen and wet grassland habitat. Previous land drainage has had a significant impact on these habitats and has put the carbon stored in the peatlands at risk. A substantial part of the first phase of restoration work which entailed installing around 5000 dams across the network of grips (channels cut into the peat) was completed in 2022 working with Yorkshire Peat Partnership funded through the Nature for Climate fund. This work contributes to a wider program of work with the Great North Bog partnership.' https://lnkd.in/etPnxfEk Nature North Yorkshire Peat Partnership Yorkshire Wildlife Trust

Above Sheffield, nestled in a community, you will find the Green Estate team, volunteers, apprentices and community making great use of the former Sheffield Deer Park to grow food, seeds, businesses and make space 'for nature and people to thrive'. Yesterday, we made our way up to this vantage point for the Nature North Sheffield Away Day - pondering the many challenges and merits of a team working for different organisations, across the north...and finding lots of inspiration in the work of Sheffield Green Estate CIC. It was great to meet Ted Talbot, Director of Place for Green Estate and hear about the diverse range of funding and income sources they are working with to keep their vision alive. It was equally motivating to hear about the constant work the team need to do to keep that income coming in and the challenges seen in local authorities, such as Sheffield City Council, with a shrinking budget for the maintenance and enhancement of the cities many public parks. The Nature North team focussed on taking time to think about how we work and what we can do to meet the needs of the team and the Nature North collaboration. Here are some of our reflections on what we need as a team: 📌 More time together; we're busy, but it's vital 📌 Shared workspaces; a challenge across multiple organisations 📌 Time to refocus on our purpose 📌 Opportunities to learn from each other and others, like Ted If you're in the area, I recommend a brisk uphill walk to visit the park, café and community space...especially when it's sunny, which I am told is almost every day in Sheffield! An interesting opportunity for upland farmers. The University of Cumbria is offering a part-time, short course called 'Upland Farming for Net Zero' beginning in September. It will take place at their Ambleside campus, at upland farms across the county and online. Participants will learn where and how greenhouse gases are emitted, captured and stored on an upland farm, and will compare farming practices and land management options, completing a quantitative farm carbon audit and identifying practical steps towards net zero emissions. Up to 12 full bursaries, subject to eligibility, are being offered by the Foundation for Common Land. For more info https://lnkd.in/d2nQjDXY (apply by 31st July.)
