Biodiversity is a hot topic, but how to actually have it as a part of businesses is difficult, but we think eDNA is one of the answers. 🔬 We took our first proper step towards understanding how to incorporate it. Hundipea has teamed up with NatureMetrics and our Head of Greentech Mari-Liis Kell is spearheading our project to actually understand how our different experiments and actions affect biodiversity, we do it by looking at eDNA. This week we have been taking samples from dirt, sea and seabed at Paljassaare harbor, Tallinn. It is a brownfield that we are on our way to transform into a true urban space and experience. We also took samples from our neighbouring nature reserve to have as a reference. Next step is to send the samples for analysis. 🐞 🐛 🐟 🍄 🌳 Why do we look at biodiversity? Most importantly to have a scientific understanding of what is going on around us and how we are and can affect it. But there are several other points to bring out like: 🐞 Community and social benefits - Quality of life - Community support - Mental health 🐞 Regulatory compliance - Environmental regulations - Permitting processes 🐞 Sustainable development and risk management - Long-term viability - Environmental impact and climate change mitigation - Resilience to natural disasters 🐞 Market demand and value - Attractiveness to buyers and businesses - Property value 🐞 Corporate responsibility and image - Reputation - Brand differentiation 🐞 Innovation and efficiency - Design innovation - Resource efficiency Exciting times ahead, hope we can fulfill our goal through periodic measurements and analysis to gain knowledge about our actions and therefore have the wisdom to apply it properly. #eDNA #Hundipea #Biodiversity

Traditional Knowledge 🤝 eDNA Technology For years, Inuit communities in Labrador observed changes in their waters - Striped bass, a new visitor, are becoming frequent guests in their ancestral waters. But how to prove what generations had seen in these remote, often ice-covered environments? Enter the NunatuKavut Community Council and NatureMetrics. Armed with cutting-edge eDNA technology and centuries of traditional knowledge, we embarked on an exciting project. Our approach: 1. Mapped sightings based on Inuit observations 2. Collected water samples from critical locations with simple to use kits 3. Analysed eDNA to detect the elusive Striped bass NatureMetrics eDNA technology helped overcome challenges posed by Labrador's inaccessible terrain and freezing temperatures, where conventional sampling methods struggle. The result? Water samples confirmed what Inuit traditional knowledge had long suggested: Striped bass are expanding their range. The power of this combination? · Validated Inuit observations · Quantifiable data for policy-makers · A new model for community-led conservation This journey teaches us that the future of biodiversity monitoring lies not in choosing between traditional and modern approaches, but in bringing them together in harmony. eDNA sampling has started aboard the Abel Tasman! 🌊 Keith Tuffley and his crew are in their 5th week of the Northwest Passage expedition ⛵️ They packed our eDNA kits and we couldn’t be more excited to see them in action 🧬. They’ve already encountered some magnificent wildlife such as long-finned pilot whales, seals, white-beaked dolphins, sperm whales, pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins and many seabird species. 🐋🦭🐬 The crew has now sailed through the first Tipping Point of their journey: the Labrador-Irminger Seas Convection Collapse. It hasn’t been smooth sailing, as they experienced strong gales, fog, huge waves, and icebergs up to 100m wide whilst passing Cape Farewell. Well done to the entire crew which has now doubled in size and counts 7 nationalities! 👏🌍 Each eDNA sample collected represents a wealth of information about Arctic marine biodiversity. As the expedition continues, we're eagerly anticipating the insights this data will provide about this rapidly changing ecosystem.🌐🔬 Read more in our dedicated blog post: https://lnkd.in/eyvHCAyp Stay tuned for more updates on the crew and their crucial work! 🧬🧪So great to see our eDNA technology in action!   We’ve been working with GRIDSERVE to help them evaluate the soils on their solar farms. With our eDNA kits, they’ve been able to analyse and understand the diversity of microorganisms in the soil, providing precious data on the area's biodiversity and how it is changing over time. We can’t wait to see the results!    💡Learn more about solar farms and how, contrary to popular belief, they may not be not a threat to UK agriculture in Steve Alton FRSB’s post ⬇   You can learn more about our eDNA and biodiversity monitoring solutions on our website: naturemetrics.com

As it’s Global Energy Independence Day on the 10th, here are some musings on solar energy and agriculture: One of the criticisms I hear most often of solar farms, aside from their visual impact, is the associated loss of productive agricultural land. Agricultural land in the UK is classified under a system called, unsurprisingly, the Agricultural Land Classification, with grades 1, 2 and 3a comprising what is known as the Best & Most Versatile Agricultural Land (BMVAL). In planning law, whilst there isn’t a strict presumption against solar farms on BMVAL, the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) states that the economic benefits of BMVAL should be recognised when a Planning Authority considers an application. For most Authorities, a developer will need to identify why the use of BMVAL is necessary or whether it is possible or feasible, when taking into account other material planning considerations, to locate the scheme on lower grade agricultural land. Feasibility often comes down to the availability of a viable grid connection, as well as factors such as topography and drainage. But if a solar farm should be granted planning permission on agricultural land, what then? Here are a few things to consider before writing a stern letter to your MP: 1. We’re talking about a very small area, in the scheme of things Currently solar farms occupy less than 0.1% of the UK’s land. To meet current net zero targets, the Climate Change Committee estimates that we will need 90GW of solar by 2050 (70GW by 2035), which would mean solar farms would at most account for approximately 0.6% of UK land – less than the amount currently occupied by golf courses! 2. They aren’t permanent - they’re reversible The typical lifespan of a solar farm is 25 to 30 years. At the end of the operational period, given the simple construction/ decommissioning techniques associated with solar farms, all infrastructure can be easily removed and agricultural activities recommenced. This decommissioning is typically secured through a planning condition. 3. They’re actually good for the soil Soil is crucial for biodiversity and ecosystem services. However, soil health is threatened in England and Wales due to compaction and erosion. Taking soil out of cultivation for 25-30 years allows recovery. The construction phase inevitably entails some short-term disturbance, but the actual area of soil that is disturbed is very small, typically less than 2% of the total area. Post-construction, solar farms provide uninterrupted carbon sequestration and support biodiversity. At GRIDSERVE, we’ve worked with WYCHWOOD BIODIVERSITY LIMITED and NatureMetrics to assess the soils on four of our solar farms. As well as looking at levels of organic carbon, we’ve used environmental DNA (eDNA) to baseline the diversity of microorganisms in the soil. We can now repeat that methodology every few years to see how the ecology of the soils is changing over the lifespan of each site.
