Coming from a community surrounded by the Keta Lagoon, I had a first hand exposure to the economic benefit of #mangroves, these wetlands harbor #fishes, #crabs, and other edible invertebrates, which played a vital role in the #foodsecurity for our livelihood and existence couple with the enormous #ecosystembenefits 🙏. Kudos to Daniel Kofi Abu , and team at Terraformation for the good work in their restoration .
Today, we celebrate the silent sentinels of our shorelines—the #mangroves. These remarkable ecosystems act as natural fortresses against coastal #erosion, protect us from storm surges, and serve as nurseries for countless #marine species. Their intricate roots create a sanctuary for biodiversity, sustain local communities, and capture vast amounts of carbon, which is crucial in mitigating #climate change. On this #International Day for the #Conservation of the #Mangrove #Ecosystem, we recognize the indispensable value of mangroves and the urgent need to protect and restore them. Let us honor these vibrant ecosystems by committing to their conservation, understanding that their health is intrinsically linked to our planet's and future generations' well-being. #Terraformation is championing a unique approach to mangrove restoration in #Ghana, focusing not just on saving the remaining mangroves but also on safeguarding the ecosystems to continue performing their essential roles for humans. Together, let's ensure these extraordinary #coastal forests continue to thrive, safeguarding our coasts and enriching our lives with their myriad benefits.

Amidst the climate and biodiversity crises, global leaders have rallied behind forest restoration, aiming to grow over a trillion trees. Yet many tree planting projects fall short of expectations, leading to failures and unintended consequences. The key question: How well do tree-growing organizations adhere to best practices to ensure successful outcomes? And what can we do to increase knowledge to improve results? We're excited to share about this new project in the Philippines 🇵🇭! Located in Bukidnon Province, the CCCO2 project combines agroforestry and biodiverse reforestation to benefit communities and our climate.
In the midst of all the chaos, I thought you’d like to know that climate and reforestation work are still continuing. If you’re interested, I’ll share some info about a recent project Terraformation has been helping with in the Phillippines... The Philippines is one of the most unique places on Earth. It’s also been one of the most heavily colonized, bringing invasive species and dramatic shifts in land use over centuries. That makes its present-day biodiversity even more extraordinary. https://lnkd.in/ggmgqT4P Globally, the Philippines ranks fifth in its number of native plant species. The forests are home to endangered turtles, primates, and over 700 bird species, some of which are found nowhere else on Earth. Yet the country is losing around 47,000 hectares of rainforest annually to deforestation and climate change. It's critical to turn that around. Terraformation is embarking on a significant reforestation project in Bukidnon Province, restoring 1,000 hectares of tropical forest cleared long ago by colonial cattle ranchers. We’re partnering with CCCO2, a Philippine reforestation and conservation company. They’re experienced in the project area and have forged relationships with the Indigenous communities these ancestral domain lands belong to. For these communities, this is an opportunity to restore not just the forests, but also the livelihoods, food security, and natural resources lost over generations of exploitation. The co-benefits of the Bukidnon project are substantial and based on community needs: equal employment opportunities with women in leadership roles, water quality improvement, reduced wildfire risk. But agroforestry is key. Sustainable livelihood opportunities and food security are the greatest local needs. CCCO2’s plan integrates cocoa, hemp, and local grain crops with native tree species. Restoration will bring back native biodiversity, reduce erosion, and improve soil health—in addition to the climate benefits of a tropical forest. This first phase alone will sequester 508,000 tonnes of CO2 over 40 years. With potential to expand by 12,000 hectares, the project’s full impact can be far greater. The project aligns with the Philippines’ Paris Agreement goals, which pledge a 75% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The first plantings start in January 2025, with a 40-year commitment. With support from funders, we can restore Bukidnon’s natural biodiversity, improve local livelihoods, and meet global climate targets. The mangrove ecosystems of the Keta Lagoon Complex Ramsar site (KLCRS) in Ghana face significant challenges. Years of substantial decline in mangroves for fuelwood and construction have led to the degradation of these vital habitats, resulting in the loss of biodiversity, essential ecosystem services, and sustainable livelihoods for local communities. Hyper-salinization of soils, coastal erosion, and saltwater intrusion are just some of the problems exacerbated by this environmental degradation. Regenerative Development of Anlo Wetlands (ReDAW) project is a transformative initiative aimed at restoring deforested mangrove habitats. This project focuses on large-scale mangrove reforestation, along with other initiatives such as regenerative aquaculture and apiculture. The project aims to tackle the issue of mangrove decline, mitigate climate change, and enhance community well-being. Special mention to Terraformation, Xavier Hatchondo , Yann-Olivier D. and Raphael Y. Ahiakpe. At Earthood , we take pride in Riya Sharma and Dr. Sadaf Nazneen’s recent audit of this transformative project. By providing detailed, transparent evaluations, we empower initiatives like this to realize their full potential in driving impactful climate action. New in our series: The UK is facing an ecological disaster: ash dieback disease threatens to decimate 80% of its 125 million ash trees. This disease not only endangers the trees but also the 115 species that rely on them. Biochar is showing promise in fighting the disease — but funding for more research and treatment is urgently needed.
