The species is so acclaimed, that it has spurred huge conservation efforts and specific tourist activities bringing people from all over the world to the highlands of Costa Rica. Project partners 🤝: American Bird Conservancy and Organization for Tropical Studies Project focus 🎯: Monitor and establish a bird and biodiversity baseline to support ongoing conservation efforts and help further develop the BirdsPlus Index, a tool for measuring biodiversity on working lands. 🎬 And that’s a wrap! Vi invito a visitare l´ultima creazione curatoriale a cui ho lavorato al museo della tecnica di Vienna. Si tratta della mostra permanente "Klima. Wissen. Handeln!", che parte dalla costatazione di come la terra sia ferita basandosi sul concetto delle "planetary boundaries", poi passa ad un excursus sui processi che l´hanno portata ad ammalarsi, e attraverso una riflessione sulla psicologia relativa a questa scomoda realtá dei fatti, arriva ad incoraggiare l`´individuo e la collettivitá a prendere scelte importanti per un presente e un futuro sostenibile, migliore. Oltre agli oggetti della collezione del Technisches Museum Wien mit Österreichischer Mediathek, l´ Acousting Monitoring System ideato e utilizzato da Rainforest Connection (RFCx), un corallo speciale del 1910 del Naturhistorisches Museum Wien sono in mostra! We're pleased to introduce Lyuboslava D., joining us to work on ARBIMON as a Software Developer! 🌟 Fun fact: "I'm a wildlife artist at heart (long before I was a software engineer or an ecologist!)." 🗯 Why she joined RFCx: "I've always wanted to combine my technical skills and my ecology and conservation background and use them for a good cause. As a researcher, I've seen firsthand how chaotic data analysis can get, so it's great to be working on a tool that makes researchers' lives easier. I also believe in the huge potential of acoustic research for biodiversity monitoring and conservation and am proud to be joining a team that helps drive the field of bioacoustics forward. I also happened to be reading Tom Mustill's brilliant book about bioacoustics "How to Speak Whale" at the time I was talking to Antony Harfield (RFCx's CTO), so that might have nudged me in the right direction too (happy accidents, haha!)." 🤝 What she hopes to accomplish with us: "I hope to help further improve the Arbimon system, both from a user's and a technical perspective. I like writing readable, maintainable, and easily extensible code and solving technical challenges using best practices. I also hope to assist the data science and research team in any way I can, bringing my machine learning and data science experience to the table. And last but not least, I'd like to spread the word and help more people discover the efficiency of incorporating Arbimon into their research projects." Very excited to now be leveraging bioacoustics to complement Dr. Jane Goodall's pioneering long-term research in Gombe. The Jane Goodall Institute has a long history of unlocking the power of innovative technologies with local communities and decision makers to improve the lives of people, animals and shared environment - from GIS and satellite imagery since 2000 to mobile technologies since 2009, to cloud-based modeling since 2012, just to name a few. Looking forward to continuing collaboration with Rainforest Connection (RFCx), ARBIMON, Google Earth Engine (GEE) and other partners to integrate bioacoustics with other field and satellite data and technologies and build local capacities to enable biodiversity data collection and use at scale.

But because sound recorders can run 24/7, we can effectively survey these birds using passive acoustic recording! Project partners 🤝: Partnerships for Forests, KKI Warsi, & PT REKI-Hutan Harapan (an initiative of BirdLife International, Burung Indonesia & Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) Project focus 🎯: To better understand biodiversity patterns in Hutan Harapan, Sumatra, Indonesia, and assess the presence and distribution of vocal wildlife as well as the environmental factors that influence them. Today we're celebrating #WorldWildlifeDay 🐆 Recognized by the United Nations, this day shines a light on the importance of wild animals and plants, celebrating their diverse roles in the ecosystem and their contributions to our planet. This year’s #WWD2024 theme, ‘Connecting People and Planet: Exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation’, underscores the critical role of technology in conservation efforts. WeForest is leveraging technology to make a difference, notably through our collaboration with Rainforest Connection (RFCx) in the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. Our ongoing research project monitoring forest sounds has detected nine new species in our restoration sites in Pontal, in partnership with IPÊ - Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas. This brings our total to 187 identified species: 174 birds, nine amphibians, two insects, and two monkeys. Impressively, the species richness at WeForest’s restoration sites averages 24 species, nearly matching that of mature forests, which average 25 species. This is a stark contrast to farming sites, which average only 15 species. Head to our comments to hear the ear-piercing shriek of a black lion tamarin monkey, pictured here 🐒
